Barrett Rallies Students to Vote Absentee

The 28-day residency requirement in the Voter ID law and the unique summer election cycle could cause a low college student turnout, so Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett met with students Monday afternoon to energize young voters.

In a normal election year, college students are encouraged to go out and vote at their nearest polling location, but the new Voter ID law and the unique summer election schedule will completely change how political parties get out the college vote.

Milwaukee Mayor and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett met with UW-Milwaukee students and faculty Monday afternoon to remind them not only to get out and vote in the June 5 election, but to vote using the same address they used in the May 8 primary election.

Because of the new 28-day residency requirement included in the Voter ID bill, students that voted from their campus location in May will have to request an absentee ballot to vote from that same address when they go home for the summer.

That change could affect college voter turnout, and Barrett said the requirement was an intentional move by Republicans to deter Democratic-leaning college students from voting.

"It's no surprise they're trying to make it harder for young people who are in college to vote in the same legislative session that they've cut funding for universities and technical schools, because you have been directly impacted by their actions," Barrett said.

College Democrats of Wisconsin President Andy Suchorski said his group has led an absentee ballot drive over the past two months, and so far they have 200 students registered at UW-Milwaukee and 600 statewide.

"It's very difficult getting students to vote when they're not in school," he said. "It's one thing to knock on their dorm room door and say, 'Hey, go vote downstairs.' It's another to say, 'Hey you have to fill out an absentee request, you have to register and all of that fun stuff.'"

Another student, Katie Klein, has been hitting the pavement to get students registered.

"People are really confused, and for good reason," she said.

Barrett told the crowd near the UW-Milwaukee Union cafeteria that he would end the "civil war" created by Gov. Scott Walker and bring the state back together. He also repeated his claim that the state's job loss is a result of Walker losing focus on job creation, choosing instead to travel around the country and speak at fundraisers.

Barrett was joined by State Rep. Jon Richards and Congresswoman Gwen Moore, who told the students that a Walker victory in the recall election could boost the confidence of Republicans in Washington, DC, and statehouses across the country in pushing forward similar policies.

"If they win here in Wisconsin, they will be emboldened to take down Medicare, to take down Social Security, to take down Pell grants, to take down Stafford loans, to take away women's reproductive freedoms," Moore said. "This state is a firewall against losing all of our rights, and we had better treat it that way."

Talk about legitimized voter fraud. With regular elections this isn't a problem, but now since there are no other elections nation wide (except for a token primary or two), the 28 day window allows transient students to vote in Wisconsin, then a month later re-register back in their own state.

Of course, this is what we have come to expect from the Democrats!

We have come to expect Repubs to disenfranchise voters like the elderly, students and minorities. I'd far rather see a proactive political party than a devisive one.

Always the Democrats - NEVER missing an opportunity to score political power, thus taxing authority, by promising to give to students what they will take from others...

It just never ends - which is why Democracy always degenerates into a selfish orgy of Idiocracy - in the end, the altruistic, responsible, intelligent and the caring are ALWAYS the losers.

Want to end the high cost of College Education - well, start by getting rid of Student Loans and the debt misery they create for Students - THEN Colleges will have to COMPETE for a smaller pool of money - and prices will go down.

Richard, as a current student and member of the younger generation, I'm a little troubled by your argument for a "smaller pool of money"--this is a message we get almost consistently from the older generation, that by some factor out of control there should be less of us expecting to make our way into higher education. Regardless of who you place the blame on, we can agree that employment in the U.S. is lower than it ought to be. A solution to student debt that keeps the younger generation out of better jobs cannot be the best one, and certainly not a very sustainable one.
Not making a comment on the politics of the situation, but I hope you can consider another perspective in regards to this issue from the people actually caught up in it.

This time we are going to remind Wisconsin about Walker's incompetence and corruption.

Remember. Both guys resided over the same body of land. Barrett took his job seriously. Walker only saw it as a stepping stone.

Thanks for the link, it gave me a good laugh. Keith, you are starting to look as desperate as Barrett.
This really comes down to the unions getting greedy and getting their hand slapped. Then a bunch of suckers bought into their tantrum and the next thing you know, we have a "screw ups" list.
How did Barrett not see his job as a stepping stone??? One moronic statement after another.
Was it not mayor Barrett that Ran against Scott Walker? HMM, Oh he didn't really "want" to be Governor, that's why he lost in 2010.

Comment_arrow

Yeah, Working - it's ONLY for the suckers in the private sector....

Imagine if you started a Business, invested your time, money, life savings - all to pursue a dream, a vision, to achieve financial independence and live life in the manner you saw fit.... NOW IMAGINE - you can't sell your idea, your business falls flat, you lose everything, they take your house, car, pride, dignity... it happens when you take a chance to better yourself...

But why? WHY TAKE THE RISK - when you can enter government - the public sector - where, thanks to the miracle of taxing authority - backed by the Swat Team of the Sheriff - you can make your dreams come true, with little to no accountability. Form a "union political action committee", vote your people in, vote your wage and benefit increases... IT IS a problem, because the suckers, er, taxpayers , well, some object to being fleeced and losing their homes and possessions - for your gain, but hey, once you kick those people out of their homes and send them away - WHO CARES?

GO GALT!

Deb, the previous DEMOCRAT controlled legislature pushed through Diamond Jim Doyle's budget in about the same time frame. The difference is that they did most of their dirty work behind closed doors. The Republicans on the other hand were up front and held a near record number of hearings. The only reason it appeared "rushed" is because all 14 of the states Democratic Senators were vacationing in Illinois and couldn't be bothered to debate the bill.

Barrett needs to bring the young voters out! the old fogies are too close-minded, ears cemented shut and walking away from that which has become unconcealed [now then: I apologize for jumping in w/both feet and w/o reading all the prescient comments, but.. - (and , Alfred here's a little "liberal" education for your right-wing asylum buddies and you)]:
Walker is destroying higher education in this state. Perhaps your kids will not be so closed-eared and closed-minded. We know that Walker wants to divide and fracture this state for decades: his way is destructive not better! If you have time and to see the other side of the argument and to be better informed, read Paul Krugman's "End the Depression Now!": the TP Republicans doctrine of "expansionary austerity" is just plain wrong! the untold damage already done by their navel-gazing profiteering is destroying the underlying fabric of our country and of this State. We need to invest in the US: stimulus! now/ The depressed state of our economy isn't just causing a lot of short-term pain, it is have what will be a decades-long destructive, corrosive effect on this State and this Nation's long-run prospects! Stop drinking the Kool-Aid and get thee to a tubal detoxification facility: tonight!

Higher education IS a mess now! It needs serious reform both on the academic and financial levels. It is horribly overrated. Look at the lack of quality of the end product our govt-run schools are producing! Working with too many of these "educated" people is a challenge in itself. They lack initiative, common sense (but certainly not arrogance) due to the (mostly social) indoctrination they/their parents/taxpayers pay way too much for.

I am sensing a sad amount of close-mindedness from those on each side of the issue. I think the main theme we SHOULD have learned from these months of political issue is that divisive politics get us absolutely nowhere. If we don't learn to stop name-calling, question-avoiding, and thinking of a comeback before we even consider the content of what the "opponent" said, we are going to destroy our state and this nation. Compromise and LISTENING are important parts of a basic elementary education - how is it acceptable to abandon them as soon as we get older? I have no expectation of everyone agreeing on anything, but we can at least have healthy discussions about it without being cruel to one another. The most important human right is respect, and everyone deserves that. Please be cordial and open-minded.

Respect is something that is earend not somthing to be expected . Parasites have no respect coming from anybody they need to start paying their own way. Leeches and parasites on the taxpayers could care less about how high taxes go because they don't pay any. After Walker is relected he will have 4 years to cull the herd thank God for him. the leeches and parasites would continue to leech off of the bankrupt taxpayers if something is'nt done

Tom, Governor Walker's term does not get extended after the election, his term will be up the same as his current term in 2014.
Some would argue that the term should be extended to a full 4 years, following a recall, Then the recallers would have a dog in the fight. As it stands, the recallers have not much to lose.
