UPDATED: It's 100 Degrees Once Again as Excessive Heat Warning Continues

Hot, humid and hazy combine to create dangerous circumstances as heat indices reach the triple digits and temperatures on Thursday may themselves exceed 100 degrees.

Updated 1:15 p.m. Thursday: The air temperature in Milwaukee has reached 100 for the second consecutive day, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS's current conditions website has Milwaukee at 100, Racine at 101 and Kenosha at 102 at 1 p.m. Heat indexes — a factor of humidity and other components to produce a "feels like" reading — are:

  • Milwaukee: 104
  • Racine: 104
  • Waukesha: 99
  • Sheboygan: 104

An excessive heat warning had been in effect to the west of our area, but that warning has been extended to nearly all of southern Wisconsin, including Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties until 10 p.m. Friday. The rest of the state remains under a heat advisory, with lower temps and heat indices expected.

Heat indices are similar to wind chill affects in reverse, and will be 100-105 degrees on Thursday, and up to 110 degrees on Thursday. It's important to respect the heat and stay hydrated with water and other drinks to maintain your electrolyte balance.

In fact, the NWS reports that heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year. In fact, on average, excessive heat claims more lives each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined.

Keep your elderly neighbors in mind, as they also fall into a higher risk category for handling the heat, along with small children. And for heaven's sake ignore the sad looks of your pets as you head to the car - they may want to come with you, but a cool house is a kinder place for them to stay.

Well, well here we have another subtle global warming warning. Republicans will denounce it and continue to seek that their oil pipeline to continue. All the more to dump into our atmospheres’ and oceans.
Obama has and is seeking Alternative energies as best as he can through the oily black coaly toxic sludge that the republicans support. Cutting as much as possible any support to Green energies. Observe even the Chinese realize that Green is the future as they invest $ 50 Billion into their Alternative Energies as Obama could only squeeze out $ 5 Billion through the republican sludge lobbyist. $ 85 Billion in corporate subsides with about 60% of that going to the Oil companies that have record producing profits, pay no taxes, and receive Billions in subsides [welfare] . Now you all enjoy your warm summers now and the many to follow. Its what you voted for.

Bernard you may be the most ignorant person here. Your comment "Ever try to rationalize with drunks and alcoholics‘?", proves it. Why would an alcoholic be any less rational than a non-alcoholic? Irrational is some moron (like you), that looks out of his window and makes a conclusion about climate change. The highest temperature ever recorded in Wisconsin was 114 F at Wisconsin Dells on July 13, 1936, and the lowest temperature on record was minus 55 F, reported from Couderay on both February 2 and February 4, 1996. So are we experiencing an ice age?

Explains the half baked means by how you determine climate change. Then you babble on about how others derive that information with no knowledge of the other individual. Now put down your bottle and try a simple experiment. Just 2 values o temperature as a means to come to a conclusion is well…?? Now try this call up your local meteorologist [weatherman] and ask them if they could give you the record highs for the past years and record lows for those same years and then figure it out. Try calling as many of these guys and compare their results. DUH why take only one persons opinion or just 2 vague temperatures that your chemically induced brain can handle…

A consistent trend towards more frequent hot days has not yet emerged. From 1950 to 2006, the observed frequency of 90°F days has increased by 2 days per year across northwestern Wisconsin and decreased by 2-4 days per year over central and southwestern Wisconsin. Southeastern Wisconsin has seen no change.

Dearest Greg. Why do I surmise that a more rational individual is more likely to be found in a non-alcoholic? That you have to ask the question even after I gave you a hint [chemically induced] speaks volumes about you. As to your data it is incorrect. You are just making up numbers. Your 2 day per year equals to 112 days increase to the present and 168 days decrease of a 90 day summer? LOL that leaves us with “56” days betwixt the two of decrease at 90 degrees. Which is the amount of years from 1950 to 2006. What a coincident. You did not measure the individual Heat record against the Cold record producing. Of the two which is greater and the lesser and or remains the same. Again an alcoholic is mastered by their emotions in their everyday lives. Observe your emotional responses and half baked annalist. Bernard, To start off, I don't drink, smoke or use illicit drugs. I do take OTC and prescription medication as needed. My caffeine intake is very low, so your "[chemically induced]" comment is as wrong as everything else you say.
As to me making up numbers, wrong again dipstick. You just have a comprehension problem, probably chemically induced. The number of days is not cumulative over the duration of the study, the change is stated in reference to a time frame, that being "per year". The report states "observed frequency", not annual increase.
The method used in the study was: The source of observed temperature data was 176 weather stations measuring daily maximum temperatures during 1950-2006 in and around Wisconsin, from the National Weather Service’s Cooperative Observer Program. These data were interpolated to an 8-km grid (Serbin & Kucharik, 2009). Trends in the frequency of daily high temperatures exceeding 90°F were estimated using the slopes of linear regression fits for the entire 1950-2006 time series.
I may be losing creditability with you, but you have none with me. I stand by my original comment that states "you may be the most ignorant person here". You are proving it with every post.

Well Greg getting better “BUT” still not there. Your parameters’ were not previously established and now your grid is activated at 90 degrees. That is not what I suggested for you to try. Again ,Record Highs, how many, versus Record LOWS. Now your perimeter of 1950 to 2006 is on a 90 degree activation scale is far to limited for accuracy. Not asking you togo into Palo climatology but something a little more recent on the extremes of measurements for a comparison. Consider this the migrations of your insects, vegetations, animals, viruses, bacteria’s, why even the length of time and amount, for the sap in a tree has. [Maple Syrup Harvesting] Trees, that once were plentiful are leaving [pardon the pun] northward bound and are being replaced by a more southern brand of tree. Now that is a more accurate observable reaction of Mother Natures to the Temperature ambiguity. Good to hear you are on a similar diet as am I. Although your emotions do not become you. Indicates a flaw in your composition. TA-TA for now..

Bernard, Since the blog was about a summer heat wave and you concluded "we have another subtle global warming warning", the data that I provided was sufficient to prove my point, that being "some moron (like you), that looks out of his window and makes a conclusion about climate change" is "irrational".
I don't let others set parameters in my conversations, nor do I need to follow your suggestions. I have already concluded that your thinking is irrational, so why would I follow your lead? You now want me to evaluate the migrations of insects and trees to conclude that your observation, of a hot day, indicated global warming. Irrational again.
At no point in this conversation did I challenge the concept of climate change, rather I challenged you and your irrational comments. I also never used emotion, just facts, so your reading of emotion goes back to your lack of comprehension, that I pointed out in an earlier post.

Once AGAIN off you go into some emotional ranting. I never suggested your conversation to be set in perimeters! That was for the research and what is to be used as the base of how and what you are obtaining your results. As to my looking out the window as the means by witch I obtain my information is naive at best for a response. Why follow me? LOL that is why I suggest you seek out the facts for yourself. Which you do not. You evaluate and conclude with insignificant facts and with a broad brush paint the universe with it. As to irrational. Well observe the flow, of a lack of rationality, with what you claim as your conclusions. No premises’ established . Simpleton rhetoric of a ranting emotionally disturbed mind. It comes and it goes. Sure smells of alcohol.. Some day, when you can get yourself together, try reading a book or two on Palo climatology. Go back, say a couple of Billions years and observe the pretty patterns. See if you can find the various cycles of our planets climates. Note their relations to gasses and continental drifts, sun spots, galactic positioning, etc., etc. If the Birds and the Bees can’t explain it to you then your last resort is EDUCATION !

People have a short term memory. On our trip in 2005 it was 103 degrees in Paxton Nebraska. I even took a picture of the thermometer. In around 1995 when we took a trip to the Dakotas it was in the 100's for many days that summer. I believe it reached 110-112 on some days. 1986 the year my son was born was a very hot dry summer too.

We have just been spoiled by a stretch mild summers.

It makes sense that heat from the sun reflecting off roofs, cars, tar and cement is going to increase surface temperatures in urban areas. That heat increases water evaporation and health risks. With a few smarts and a willingness to reimagine, we can control this issue. Take strip malls--everyone hates them. Why not create multi-story malls with underground parking? That's less tar/cement spread out to reflect and emit heat. Southeastern Wisconsin is one of the worst urban sprawl areas in the U.S. Why? Another thought. Every farm and field that falls to a developer is a potential reduction in food production. The population grows and food growing areas decrease--that's dangerously shortsighted.

Global warming isn't a natural phenomenon, act of God, or conspiracy theory. It's people being greedy, lazy, and self-absorbed. It's time to be sensible about building and the materials used.

Steve, how does skimming material work for you as a "job creator?" It is called SUMMER, or "summer" if you are calm. (I confess to being fascinated by your workplace gestalt if your Patch claims are true. The beatings will continue until morale improves? ; )

There are grants for sustainable building as well as tax incentives. There are also opportunities to re-fit existing structures to be more environmentally friendly. A tour of the SMART house at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry revealed that its $500,000 construction price tag, following state and local construction regulations, saved enough in utility charges etc., to pay for itself in three years. There's growing interest in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in our area (MATC offers curriculum). Johnson Controls is a world leader in this technology. So I believe that inability to adapt to new technologies/trends will be more costly to related industries in the mid and longterm in terms of competitiveness.

Nothing is going to make the weather better today that I know of, unfortunately.

Johnny, if you wish to believe that the sun doesn't warm the earth, that's fine. Just leave that nice shady parking spot open for me. ; )

Jay, I think the real question is, how important is it to keep building (urban/suburban sprawl) or finding new ways to use existing structures? I think this is a better way to go than continuously sprawling out. As I wrote above, we are turning farmland--food land--into sprawl at an eventually unsustainable rate. I think it's something we should deal with before it becomes a problem.

mau, the SMART House was a project/exhibition of the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. There are people who can afford such construction, but there was a great deal also to be learned about new ways to approach renovation. The relative I visited the House with, for example, renovated their kitchen and bathroom in a completely different way than originally planned as a result, with a focus on water saving. (They didn't spend $500,000!)

mau, since you ask the plumbing and electrical work was done by certified contractors, as was the cabinetry and energy star appliance installation. The latter was necessary because the previous stove was a 1932 model installed during their "vintage" phase (don't ask. They had and used a c. 1910 "plunger" vacuum). A favorite Parisian bistro has wall mounted booths for two and this has been recreated to serve as a breakfast nook.

The bathroom features a type of commode that automatically adjusts water flow, saving water. New insulation retains coolness/heat. The relative hand laid wall tile recycled from brown bottles. A new niche wall features small off-beat souvenirs from Toyko, Istanbul, etc. My favorite are the ceiling tiles. The lid of my favorite small, ornately carved wooden box with an onion-shaped ball-top was used to create a reverse mold. Hundreds of this element were cast in plaster and installed on the ceiling. All done by hand. So a contractor/artisan combo. Hope that helps!

Jay, in response, I contacted a relative at Kohl's Corporate (not CEO), who shares that most of the staff lives in the near vicinity of the original location. The decision to stay in MFLS was better for the commuting employees. Most of the company's outbuildings are in that area too. The MFLS choice was in Kohl's better interest, based on what I heard.

You're right but talking about this flies in the face of the global warming scare. We are in a La Nina pattern.

How often does La Niña occur?
El Niño and La Niña occur on average every 3 to 5 years. However, in the historical record the interval between events has varied from 2 to 7 years. According to the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, this century's previous La Niñas began in 1903, 1906, 1909, 1916, 1924, 1928, 1938, 1950, 1954, 1964, 1970, 1973, 1975, 1988, and 1995. These events typically continued into the following spring. Since 1975, La Niñas have been only half as frequent as El Niños.

"The temperature this summer (Chicago 1995) exceeded 90 degrees 30 times, including twice when it soared above 100. It may be small consolation, but those figures are far below the records set in 1988. During that summer, there were 44 days of 90 degrees or over and seven days at or above the century (100 degree) mark."

You cant simply just say the earth is warming or cooling based on a 100 years of weather much less a 1000 years of weather recording. Fact Is the earth has been here millions of years and It goes threw my cycles of heating and cooling. Scientists have only began to scratch the surface in this area so Id say no one is right or wrong in this matter. Fact is there is just not enough facts to know for sure, but some of the things the environmentalist are saying in these comments are just plain dumb and make no sense. While a 110 degrees heat index is downright dangerous, if interpreting the chart correctly, a 137 degrees heat index is exceptionally hazardous...

With this info in hand, a profound sense of urgency message to caregivers can prep them properly for those in their care (young children, the elderly and folks with immunocompromised health)

A 110 vs 137 heat index is a SIGNIFICANT difference...

It's the NWS calculation. I believe wind speed and direction are also a consideration, as Ozaukee was left out of the warning because the lake breeze was expected to be higher. I will defer to them, as it didn't feel like 137 degrees at any time yesterday, but if I were in a corner surrounded by hard surfaces, it may have.

WOW, the original question was whether you folks changed any plans because of the heat. It looks like the answer would be that it's caused people to stay indoors and do research.

Oddly, I didn't need the NWS to tell me that it's hot outside, and spent most of my time working inside as I planned. Who gets paid to come up with the excessive jargon? Excessive heat warnings, and their cousins, heat advisories are fairly powerful vague terms meaningless to the general public. But they pale in comparison to a declaration of heat emergency, right?

I like how we have special warnings for every possible circumstance now. Like a wind advisory when there's a breeze, a rain advisory when it's cloudy, the multi-tier series of warnings and alerts issued every time a thunderstorm is passing through along with the urgings that you "prepare" for it. I prepare for a thunderstorm by continuing to sit in my living room.

I also don't recall there ever being a need to tell us it's windy or cold, either. However, folks STILL leave their kids in the car, their pets in the car, and people do die in this stuff. I think trying to make it sound more official is a way to say, "we're not kidding."

Truly, I will never complain about this - I reserve bitching for the winter into spring time of the year. However, it does demand respect and some attention.

Just curious how many "green" people on this blog have a garden that can sustain them? How many hang their clothes outside? How many turn off the air conditioning and go in the basement to stay cool? How many have the skills, tools and ability to live without all the modern conveniences? How many depend on contractors vs. do-it-yourself?

How many kilowatts usage was on your last electric bill?

mau you are describing people on the far side of green. Few urban dwellers can live as the ancestors did. My utility bills, though, are extremely low because my home has excellent cool air/heat retention (except when the cat insists on sleeping in the enclosed porch and leaving the door open).

@Bren -

I'm waiting to hear how ALEC and the Koch Bros are responsible for the heat wave!

Why does almost every article on this site turn into people arguing about politics? Don't you people ever have anything else to talk about? Sheesh.

We tried to get Schmitzy and Bren to talk about other things. But when ever we tried, it always came back to Obama for Schmitzy and ALEC for Bren - what are we to do?!?!

Check out the Carboniferous Period in the earth's history that would shame our current climate in terms of high temperatures and greenhouse gas levels. Dinosaur farts and their SUVs maybe? And just only 300 million years ago. Then came the glaciers. Have we learned nothing? O, what a world, what a world, the polar ice caps are melting, melting! Run away!

Hopper may be dead, but his spirit lives on in the respect and admiration of his fans!
