Crying for Wolves: Memorial Set for Animals Killed During Statewide Hunt

The Alliance for Animals will be holding a memorial for the 117 wolves killed during Wisconsin's first hunt in fall.

The Alliance for Animals will be holding a memorial for the 117 wolves killed during Wisconsin's first hunt in fall.

Deanna Devaul, an "active" member of the Alliance for Animals, is organizing the event, according to the organization's website. The event will take place at 4:30 p.m. Friday in front of the State Natural Resources building in Madison, and will include candles, bell ringing and a poem for the wolves.

"I know that I am not alone in wanting to honor the 117 wolves who were killed in the Wisconsin hunt this year," Devaul wrote on a Facebook page created to publicize the event. "It is our intention to symbolize the wolves' lives and deaths at this memorial."

Wisconsin's first wolf hunt got off to a controversial start, with a lawsuit, filed in Dane County Circuit Court, asking the court "to stop the DNR from authorizing the use of dogs for wolf hunting until reasonable rules are established to protect dogs from injury or death, according to a press release from the society. Other plaintiffs include outdoorsmen, hunters, volunteer trackers, and other Wisconsin animal welfare organizations."

The hunt started Oct. 15 and runs through the end of February; 1,160 wolf hunting licenses were awarded.

@ann...I don't agree with holding a memorial for the wolves that were taken in the recent hunt, but to characterize wolves as "mean nasty creatures" is just plain inaccurate. Wolves are wolves, a top of the line predator, doing what wolves do. Yes they take livestock, but the fact they kill dogs and cats is immaterial. The greatest benefit to the wolf is that they cull deer herds of weak, sick and aged animals; making deer stronger and healthier. There's only been one reported death of a human by a wolf in the last one hundred years, while 800 humans a year are killed by dogs.

Not sure where you get your information Mr Ruble, but there certainly have been more than 1 death in the past 100 years due to wolves. From the tone of your post you sound very naive and ignorant of wolves, and have never seen one face to face, besides a zoo. Best to get out of the city and watch these monsters in action, as they kill healthy dogs, cats and deer and many times for sport.

@ann...I've seen plenty of wolves in the wild and watched them bring down adult elk. What is the dog doing out so it is confronting a wolf or pack? Wolves are much more discriminating than humans. If you look at their behavior, they stick to their range of about 100 square miles. They are social animals and live in packs, protecting their territory from other wolves, and in your description, from dogs. Since they cull herds keeping the deer healthy. The problem with humans hunting wolves is that unlike the wolf, humans are indiscriminate to which animal they take; taking healthy animals most often. Just for edification, I spent a good share of my life in the northern Rocky Mountains and I am well versed in the biodiversity and ecology of mountain lions, wolves, deer, elk, antelope, moose, bears and buffalo. You are proving yourself to be the naive one with the statements you're making.

Some uncomfortable facts: (yeah, it's WIKI, but it's more reliable than Lyle)

In France alone, historical records indicate that between the years 1580-1830, 3,069 people were killed by wolves, Italian records indicate that between the 15th-19th centuries, 440 people were killed by wolves in central Po valley.[10] In Imperial Russia 1890, a document was produced stating that 161 people had been killed by wolves in 1871.[8]

Candice Berner, 32, female March 8, 2010 (discovered) Berner, a teacher and avid jogger, was found dead along a road near Chignik Lake, Alaska, a village about 475 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. Snowmobilers found her mutilated body with wolf tracks in the adjacent snow. The Alaska State Medical Examiner ruled that her death was caused by "multiple injuries due to animal mauling

Kenton Joel Carnegie, 22, male November 8, 2005 Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Carnegie had gone for a walk and didn't return to the surveyors' camp where he was working. His body was found partially consumed in an area known to be frequented by four wolves which regularly fed on human refuse.

Imbeciles! Comparing a magnificent creature like a wolf to mosquitos and squirrels is beyond ignorant. It's this kind of ignorance that led to the wolf being completely wiped out in the early 1900's. I would have thought there would have been a little evolution in the intervening 100+ years. Wolves are part of a healthy ecosystem (I know that may be way beyond your minimal intellectual comprehension) There are programs in place to compensate ranchers and farmers for the loss of livestock, plus, most of us "lefty weirdos" have no problem with killing problem wolves that continously prey on livestock. It's the random killing of hundreds that's the issue.

They will run down a deer eat off its legs and then leave the deer alive to die a slow death. They kill farm animals and are a nuisance to man and beasts. A reasonible amount of them in any given area makes sense .But like any creature they should be hunted, and 117 isnt enough from what I hear.I love Gods creatures but if your going to hold a memorial their are plenty of Humandeaths, issues, and situations to mourn!

Mara-were you at the Elk run-down you speak of? I do know of creatures on this Earth that are evil, vicious, psycotic, and terrifying, and I can tell you that it is not a wolf or bear or tiger. It is a human. Wolves eat to survive, and eat the entire animal. Their teeth are designed to crush through bone. Evolution didnt give them that knowing that they would simply lick the meet off the bones and leave the rest for the birds. However, humans are arrested all the time for pointless hunting and killing of animals, just to kill, and walk away leaving the entire carcass behind. They just felt like killing, and I am sure half of them under some sort of influence. I ask you Mara, what is more terrifying: the chances of a wolf wandering into your neighborhood, or a masked man entering the schools with a loaded shotgun.....think about the real threats in this world for just a second, or dont you watch the news?

I think it is a disgusting parade of human ignorance and our sense of superiority over all other life that we need to hold hunting seasons for the Earth's creatures. What a wonderful animal the wolf is! A calculated and deadly killer, killing ONLY FOR THEIR OWN NEEDS. Earlier this year, on a jog through a well populated neighborhood, i was attacked by a dog, a plain, domesticated dog. That put me out of walking or being independent at all for almost 3 months, with permanent damage to my leg for the rest of my life. And Wisconsin calls for a 'Wolf Hunting Season'? What we should see is Wisconsin focus on much more important issues: unemployment, housing market, poverty, declining MPS, people who own dogs but do not know how to take care of them. I think this is a disgusting thing Wisconsin has started, killing creatures who kill to survive, instead of fat, pampered, spoiled dogs who have 2X's the regular amount to eat, and still ruin lives. How about that Ann?

A someone who has hunted in northeastern Wisconsin for most of my adult life, I was torn by the decision to hut wolves in Wisconsin. Anyone who has come into my home or cabin has seen the many pieces of art depicting wolves, and anyone that knows me knows that I hve contributed to many wolf preservation foundations.

So I'm torn because I would never hunt wolves. But I hunt deer, and successful deer hunting is vital to many areas of the the state's economy. Since wolves naturally prey on deer or other large mammals, there was concern of the increase in the number of wolves as it relates to deer mortality. At least that was the concern in Marinette County. In that area, deer have many natural predators including bear, coyotes and wolves. All three have seen increases in numbers and the deer population has decreased. But I'm not sure that the natural predator issue alone is the cause. For decades, the DNR has allowed very liberal doe hunting, which many of us who spend many hours in the woods, would say was more harmful to the deer population. Before the wolf hunt should have been allowed, recent efforts in deer herd management should have studied for their effectiveness in increasing the herd.

With that said, I believe the hunt itself was managed well as the numbers indicate. I won't be holding any vigils, but I hope that we have monitoring in place to see if this program should continue.

Once again my comment is directed to ann-in regards to her "eliminate the entire species, they serve no purpose to the eco system". Clearly, this comment is pure ignorance, and my previous comment, however heated, was I thought directed towards someone of some educational background. Why do you think there are predators? To hunt the prey. Why do you think the numbers of prey always outnumber the amount of predators? So that they can sustain their own population as well as that of the animals that hunt them. Knowing full well that wolves do indeed hunt deer, why not let natural processes play out? the more deer (prey) you have, the greater number of wolves (predator) you will have. That is the way of the world. To say that wolves servce no purpose in our eco system is a completely uneducated response. Take pride in your surroundings, and take a couple seconds to appreciate the Earth you live on, Ann, you may find that you can learn a thing or two.

Young Conservative, As far as I am concerned, the only creatures that kill for fun are humans. Jusxt because wolves are nature's killing machine, doesnt mean that they are vicious killing creatures who kill for the fun of it. I think you need to check your sources. I have had hunters in my family for a very long time, and have witnessed nature at its most raw. However, having Native American ancestry, we also took time to understand they dynamics at play, and respect all life, and know that no wolves kill for sport. I have never ever heard of a wolf killing (by itself) any animal, then walking away while laughing. (and Brian-I do not think all hunting is disgusting, not at all, but what upsets me about this particular act is that I do have a hard time believing that the State exhausted all other means to fix the issues out there, and that this decision was perhaps made a bit too hastily).

Heather- If you see one of my earlier posts, I agree. Now that we have traveled down the road of limited hunt, I believe it should be revisited about how we manage deer and the success of our actions. 80's and 90's brought some poor data that resulted in overkill of does in many northwood areas. Personally, I think the fawn kill created by an over abundance of black bear has done more harm than anything, yet I have waited 8 years and still can't get a bear tag in my area.

A little tidbit: my uncle was a photographer for Nat Geo, and he loved nature (obviously). But here is some actualy scientific text to back our argument:
Wolves live and hunt in packs of around six to ten animals. They are known to roam large distances, perhaps 12 miles (20 kilometers) in a single day. These social animals cooperate on their preferred prey—large animals such as deer, elk, and moose. When they are successful, wolves do not eat in moderation. A single animal can consume 20 pounds (9 kilograms) of meat at a sitting. Wolves also eat smaller mammals, birds, fish, lizards, snakes, and fruit.

If I understand correctly, "your argument" is:
"I think it is a disgusting parade of human ignorance and our sense of superiority over all other life that we need to hold hunting seasons for the Earth's creatures."

Sorry but any real nature lover will understand stewardship. Wildlife management is a necessity, not a want. It has been understood, from day one, that there was going to be hunting to control the wolf population. The ecosystem has always relied on man to kill wolves and a managed hunt is the most efficient population control.

Thought for the day: A rose in a wheat field is a weed.

You know nothing. It would probably do you good to go away, emotion is not a good argument.
Man has killed wolves since the beginning of time, we have worn their furs and man has even eaten them. Wolves are top predators, but man is still #1.
Your views on hunting are the real load of garbage, get educated then come back.

It strikes me as odd to live near a wolf refuge, have wolves at the Milwaukee County Zoo, and also wolf hunting in the state. I certainly respect that animals were in this area first but these are significant predators and must be kept from human-populated areas.

Oh, Greg, I will cut you a break here, how old are you, 16? 17? since I do not like to cut down children, I will simply disregard your comebacks as elementary and inconsequential. However, perhaps your mother would want to place a call to the Greendale Super. and let him know that her son has not yet become learned in the ways of science (and common sense for that matter), but to use your case as an example of what can happen from pure negligence and disregard for becoming a valued citizen. Believe it or not, I appreciate your comments, it only aids in making those who chose to differ from you and your 'knowlege' stand out and come out on top.

Young conservative if you are telling people they need some psychiatric help sadly you are referring to yourself.
Heather, I'm Michelle :) got your back on that one too!
Bren and everyone else in this discussio--- maybe we need to stop taking away wildlife and rebuild what we already have....oh but we can't do that we live in a society of where we have to consume everything in our path to be better than the next guy. Our motto isn't Let's Protect It...anymore
it's Let's Destroy It...
DON"T take a downtown area an rebuild it...lets go out to the woods, take an animals' home and then expect them not to care. Wow....amazingly just how self absorbed & materialistic we have become. :(
We keep taking away the woods and their homes, what do you expect wild animals to do? Humans breed at far faster rate than most animals....and we need to keep them (wild animals) out of our areas???? Whoa! Maybe WE should stop reproducing. How about that one??
Then those that call wolves monsters and killers could just live in the city and learn more about life and the value of it.

mp, the hunt wouldn't have been scheduled if there hadn't been a need to lower the amount of animals in the area. I've always believed that the DNR has done excellent work in monitoring animal populations. A quick, humane death is preferable to being hit by a car or starving to death, isn't it? I don't argue that suburban sprawl has thrown humankind into closer contact with wildlife, but this is the situation we are in.

Little Young Conservative and Craig are sad little boys that have no life and obviously quite lonely little men. I say this because real man does not talk about women that way when they are discussing life. It's called respect for one another and you two obviously have NO respect for yourselves, animals and it wouldn't surprise me if you hit babies/children and anything that can't defend themselves with out a gun in their hands too.
I guess no one ever taught you two how to step up and be real men.

Craig i am the current ower of 3 rescue dogs, all from puppy mills in Alabama and Georgia. I ahve owned dogs my entire life, but when we are killing mass amounts of animals because they are labled 'vicious' or said to kill for sport (which is totally untrue and riduculous), but yet we let HUMANS have ownership over an animal, pamper it, overfeed it (which is a form of abuse), then unleash it to the world and nothing happens to that person (and sometimes unfortunately the animal is euthanized, yes), where are we going in htis world? let us punih innocent wolves for doing what they do naturally, but lets simply give a slap on the wrist to horrible dog owners (and they outnumber vicious wolves 1000 to 1), that is an issue. Thousands of $$ went into my painful recovery, out of my own pocket, and the owner gets to sleep safvetly at night, with her animals, and not care about the size of the monkey wrench her inability to control the dog she made into a fat beast has thrown into my life. I say we put into action a law that will round up all those humans, and educate them. however, with wolves, lets just jump to killing them by the hundreds, cause that is fair right?

You realize that's 117 wolves that would have never even been around to be hunted had humans not made efforts to see that the wolf population grew in the first place. Would it be better that that had never happened? Then we wouldn't have to get upset about this.

Life is about compromises and choices. The wolf has no natural predators in this state. We can't have agriculture and a large wolf population. We're not going to do away with agriculture so wolves can flourish unabated. Be realistic. This is really the lesser of two evils.

young conservative-when you have nothing more that is of any worth to contribute to a conversation, one usually backs out, not interjects nonsense sentences. I am sorry that you are so disconnected from life and society to see what is going on around you, and that you may have too much faith in things you hardly know anything about. open your eyes, your comments have been nothing but 'liberal this, liberal that'. however, what have you said that has actually mattered in this argument? you saw a 200lb wolf? i say, tell someone of authority about taht! that would be a very large wolf. usually they top out at around 100lb's. Are you the same guy who discovered bigfoot and the lockness monster? And you are still here with us? i would have figured you would be living in some mansion somewhere in California. And be a liberal. however, i am not seeing the conservative influence in your comments anyways, so perhaps you should figure out what side of the fence you actually sit on. And it would be wise of you to not hate on the woman race. Because remember, it is because of a woman that you are even here in this conversation to begin with dear.
