Girls Tennis Preps for State Team Tournament

Knights open against Middleton; Homestead is overwhelming favorite.

Six-time winners of the dual-meet WIAA state team girls tennis tournament, Nicolet goes for another title beginning Friday agains Middleton at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison.

The Knights have won 17 titles overall, according to a press release from the WIAA. Since the dual-meet format was established in 1994, Nicolet has reached state eight times, winning titles in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

This year the Knights (6-1 in dual meets) face Middleton (18-4) in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Conference foe Homestead (21-0) is the three-time defending champion and plays on the opposite bracket. The Highlanders feature two of the last three state singles champions on in their lineup, along with this year's doubles champions.

With a win, Nicolet would face the winner of Oshkosh West and Divine Savior Holy Angels on Saturday morning in the semifinals.

Nicolet sent three individuals to the state singles tournament this year. No. 1 player Emily Mone won two matches before falling to Megan Humphreys of Kenosha Tremper. Freshman Nina Gerard captured her first match before falling to eventual runner-up Maddie Johnson of Onalaska. And junior Emma Wathen dropped her first match.

In doubles, Erin Miller and Sarah Miller were seeded second and finished third. The duo received a first-round bye then breezed through three matches before a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Sarah Woods and Mary Newby of DSHA. They rebounded from that disappointment, however, to beat Caroline Treis and Brooke Skemp of Brookfield Central in the third-place match, 6-4, 7-5.
