Michelle Obama to Meet with Families of Temple Shooting Victims
First lady is expected to be in the Milwaukee area on Thursday in a move that national Sikh leader describes as "reassuring and heartening."
First Lady Michelle Obama is coming to the Milwaukee area on Thursday to meet with family members of the victims of the Sikh temple shooting in Oak Creek.
Obama will meet with immediate family members of those who were killed and injured, a White House aide told Reuters News Service Saturday on the condition of anonymity.
It was unclear whether Obama would visit Oak Creek or the temple while she's here, or whether she'll meet with Oak Creek police Lt. Brian Murphy, who was one of four people injured in the Aug. 5 shootings. Murphy remains hospitalized and is in satisfactory condition.
Obama also will attend a campaign event while in town.
Gunman Wade Michael Page opened fire during a Sunday service at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, killing six people before taking his own life.
Rajwant Singh, the chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education, told Reuters it was critical that U.S. leaders reach out to the Sikh families in Wisconsin and to the Sikh community.
"A visit by the first lady will be reassuring and heartening and it will be a powerful symbol of President Obama embracing the Sikhs at this serious juncture," he said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
A member of President Barack Obama's cabinet, Attorney General Eric Holder, was in Oak Creek on Aug. 10 for the memorial service for the victims at Oak Creek High School.
Barack Obama called Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi on the day of the shootings to offer his condolences to the city, but has not visited the city since the shootings.
In fact, the son of temple President Satwant Singh Kaleka, who was among those killed, publicly criticized the president for not doing more to support those affected by the tragedy.
"He’s never called the victim's families, not even the board that my father led before he died," the New York Observer quoted Amardeep Kaleka as saying.

Yes, he was there for hours meeting with families in the hospitals, which was why his press conference was late (it was on tv).

I don't see eye to eye with the First Lady, but I think it's a nice gesture for her to stop and visit the families.

Paul Ryan was not here for the funeral. He did attend Natl. Nite out and the prayer vigil. Remember, Romney made his pick and Paul couldn't be in two places at the same time. City officials, FBI, and the Asst. US Attorney General are all going to have to scramble into action to bring into reality their empty promises to the residents. Perhaps hold discussions within the community which are currently being denied and provide answers to tough questions they would rather ignore. Ignorance as evidenced by the comments prevails. Welcome Michelle.

This is a wonderful gesture from the First Lady. It is sad and sickening that this peaceful temple and its congregation became a target for violence.

Was out visiting family in Denver at the time of the shooting. Yes, Obama did come to Denver, only if it was for an hour photo op. He was also there a few weeks earlier because of the forest fires. Didn't accomplish anything on either trip other than to show his face to the voters. You have to understand, Colorado is a swing state. Hence his constant trips there. And by the way, most people hate it when he comes. And with Ryan being on the ticket, that makes Wisconsin also a swing state. So expect to see more photo ops from the two of them. Oh joy,I can hardly wait.

Tansandy, your description completely contradicts what was reported on the national news. Why let the facts get in the way of a good tall tale? ; )

W.House never called Border patrol B. Terrys family after he was shot to death. But Obama did call Sandra Flueck to make sure she was ok after Rush called her what she truly is!

Even if you feel what you feel about this president have you no understanding of what this post is really about? This is about people hurting and grieving. As a person representing a mother, sister, daughter and wife of the president and the president she is here to honor those lives lost in a senseless act.

I suspect the First Lady is going to the temple not only to honor the lives lost confirmed as a hate crime but also to listen to the survivors. What do they need, what do they think needs to happen so that these types of crimes can be prevented in the future. Whites and the Moral Majority, do not wake up in the morning look in the mirror and think someone is going to disrespect me, treat me badly as related to the color of my skin and/or my faith. Ginger, you really need to come in out of the rain. President Obama has significantly improved our international image after the disgraceful foreign relations of the prior administrations. Geo. Bush Sr. Desert Storm. Clinton ordered a hit on Bin Ladin. Geo. Bush Jr destroyed Iraq. I suppose you still believe it was in search of weapons of mass destruction. More like Cheney and Daddy's investments in futures in oil. Remember Chavez kicked Shell out of the country and took over the oil fields and refinerys and Bush Jr. didn't do a thing now did he. Jr. also destroyed our economy. The first four years he had a republican house and senate. THEY deregulated the banking industry contrary to Basil one and two rules. Greenspan retired and Henry Paulson et al devalued the dollar, military spending skyrocketed. They violated the Geneva Convention with the treatment of prisioners, invaded Afganistan pushed out the Taliban and set the farmers to growing poppies again. 80% of the heroin produced comes here to our children in our schools.

the argument over this subject is amateur. some go to funerals . some do not. some send flowers. some do not. some send condolences. some do not. that alone does not a person make. the American Indians were subjected to our greed. the Irish poor were subjected to disdain, as were most lower class (poor) people. the jews were turned away from American when their ship/s were aborted. there were no great speakers that came to the aid of these people. every day there is a tragedy. both Presidents Bush and Obamma regret the hatred and harm to any person/s in the USA. whether you like it or not , everything politicians do is not for political gain. for those who are critical of our wonderful country, go quietly but go away.

Why has she not gone to Afghanistan to visit and lay a wreath for so many of the innocent villages and homes our "troops" have blown to flinders because an "insurgent" maybe lived there and their families were just collateral damage to send a message. You think this is made up? Well, then, you are just ignorant. Good will by the bullet and remote drone airplane.
