UPDATE: Helicopter Departs After Making Unexpected Landing in Bayside

Chopper makes precautionary stop in Ellsworth Park after indication of mechanical problems.

A Bayside resident was awakened Sunday morning by the sound of helicopter flying over head.

But this wasn't just any helicopter, it was a U.S. Navy chopper making a precautionary landing because of mechanical problems.

"I heard it over head and it sounded kind of loud," said Chris Konnor, whose yard overlooks . "Maybe a little abnormal. I was a little scared it was going to fall out of the sky. It was very low."

Village Manager Andy Pederson said the helicopter landed around 9:45 a.m. There were no injuries or emergencies, it was strictly a precautionary landing.

The TH-57 Bell helicopter was on its way back to Indiana after making an appearance at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh.

"It really isn't a big deal," said Bayside Police Chief Bruce Resnik, who was at the scene Sunday afternoon. "It landed under (its own) power."

Resnik said there was an indicator light on the helicopter showing there may be a mechanical problem, similar to the "check engine" light on most cars.

"That's why they landed," he said. "The difference with a car is, if a car stops running, it glides off to the side of the road. These don't...When you get an indicator light (in a helicopter), you land."

Konnor's wife, Laurie Konnor, said it was the family dog that noticed the helicopter at first.

"The dog was barking. (It) just sounded like a low flying helicopter that was awfully close, closer than normal," she said.

After mechanics checked out the chopper to make sure the indicator light did not come back on, it took off around 3:45 p.m.
