Nicolet senior Brandon Kappel won the 100 meters and helped the 400 relay team also capture gold at the WIAA track and field sectional at Menomonee Falls, qualifying for next weekend’s state meet.
Joining Kappel on the 400 relay team are Denzel Allen, DeVante Coleman and DeAnte Coleman. Their finished in 42.22, edging Milwaukee Riverside.
Kappel’s time in the 100 was 10.98, .01 better than Douglas Manning of Riverside.
On the girls side, junior Devon Peck won the championship in the shot put. Peck, a junior, recorded a best throw of 39 feet, 11.5 inches, more than three feet better than the runner-up. She was eighth at state last year with a throw of 39-2.
Lauren Cunningham also qualified for the state meet by finishing in the top three in her event, taking second in the 3,200 meters in 11:01.39. Jnana Martin captured third in the 200
The Nicolet girls finished eighth as a team and the boys 10th. UW-LaCrosse hosts the state meet June 1-2.
