Man Who Allegedly Collected Phony Recall Signatures Charged
Racine County DA files nine felony counts against 59-year-old Racine man after he is accused of forging signatures on a petition to recall state Sen. Van Wanggaard.
A man accused of falsely writing in signatures on a petition to recall state Sen. Van Wanggaard — including one from a deceased person — faces nine felony charges.
Mark Demet, 59, of Racine, has been charged by the Racine County District Attorney's Office with two felony counts of election fraud/nomination certification and seven felony counts of misappropriating identifying information for financial gain. If convicted on all charges, Demet faces up to 42 years in prison and fines up to $90,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Demet admitted that he circulated the petition and signed the names of seven people on the petition. Investigators spoke to six of the people whose names appeared on the list to verify that they had not signed the petition.
Demet is expected to make an initial court appearance at 1:30 p.m. on March 13.
Randy Brandt, treasurer for the Committee to Recall Van Wanggaard, said Demet might have been planted to discredit the recall effort, but the criminal complaint doesn’t address that issue.
“The charges imply that money was somehow involved, but no one on the Committee knows him and I know we didn’t pay him,” Brandt said. “But I’m glad that the whole process is unfolding as it should. Someone who allegedly is trying to circumvent the petition process should be charged with the crimes. And it’s a pretty serious crime.”
Still Brandt believes Demet is either some sort of renegade or had some other motive.
Brandt emailed the Racine County Sheriff’s Department earlier this month, explaining that the committee members did not know Demet. Brandt acknowledged it is possible “that a small number of fictitious signatures could have been submitted by people with their own motives, and without our detection.”
He requested that the Sheriff’s Department find out what Demet’s motive was for writing in the signatures, but the criminal complaint doesn’t address the issue.
Tea Party member identifies problem
Ironically, a Wisconsin Tea Party member put two and two together in identifying the falsified signatures.
Citizens for Responsible Government of Racine is a blog written by Ken Brown, who is an active Racine County Tea Party member. Brown said he has a business relationship with Jeff Demet, Mark's brother. When he saw Jeff Demet's name on the petitions, he believed that Jeff didn't sign the petition (his name was listed four times) because the two had talked about politics. So he called Jeff.
"(Jeff) was pretty mad," Brown said. "I asked him if he knew this guy, Mark. He said, 'Yeah, he's my crazy brother.'"
Brown said he also spoke with Jason Adams, and Nick and Holley Gabey, who are Mark Demet's neighbors. They also said their signatures were forged, so Brown turned over the information to the Racine County District Attorney's Office.
Brown said the Citizens for Responsible Government of Racine is affiliated with Milwaukee's Citizens for Responsible Government, which spearheaded the recall of Milwaukee County Executive Tom Ament.
"They've been going after voter fraud and have been for over 12 years," Brown said. "They've worked along with Americans for Prosperity and the Wisconsin Tea Party."
Caledonia Patch called Mark Demet to get a statement, but his mother, Mary, said he was at work.
“I don’t think he wants to talk about this with anyone,” she said.
Demet also wasn't home when TMJ4 went to his house. The TV station aired a story last week about the irregularities on Demet's petitions.
Demet apparently tried apologizing yesterday to his neighbor Jason Adams for his actions.
But Adams wanted nothing to do with it, he said.
“It doesn’t make it right in my book,” Adams said. “… It’s pretty serious to me and it’s touched a pretty heavy chord.”

TO Clarify: Americans for Prosperity Is a group which an issue advocacy group and education, It DOES not do election fraud. CRG has worked alongside "We're Watching" campaign is a group which is involved keeping Wisconsin elections fair and honest.
Let's also straighten out Mr. Brandt's reporting. Jeff is a friend..not a close friend..but a friend. I found his name and called him to ask if he had signed the petition's even once. I then asked him who the rest of the Demet's were that had signed and he told me who each was.. I asked if any of them would have been likely to have signed and other than Mark and his ex-wife, and his son Jackson..he didn't think they would. He also told me their brother Greg hasn't lived in Racine for 25 years. (I checked the Sen Fitz recall including Watertown, where Greg Demet lives and he did NOT sign the Fitz. recall, but his son Jason signed it twice). I think it's hysterical that Randolph Brandt is trying to throw Mark under the bus, rather than coming forward and acknowledging that the GAB and the local circulators were acting rather fast and loose with the collection process. I would love to ask Mark how he feels about these people in his cause now? But to be CLEAR..I called Jeff Demet and he was totally unaware his name was signed even once!

So, every time anyone uncovers fraud or identity theft in these petitions, the excuse will be "it's a plant"? There are dozens of similar findings of fraud. So, how are they going to explain all of those away? Can't wait to hear those excuses. The question I have is this: Where is your proof this is a setup? Are you going to call the neighbor who received a supposed apology a liar too?

Could someone please explain to me where the 'turn' is that warranted this new follow-up story, as I honestly don't see anything new except some major conjecture, speculation, conspiracy theorizing, and unconfirmable inferences being made.
If those are the kind of 'facts' that make relevant news stories today, then I have quite a bit that I'd like to disclose about President Obama. Oh wait, my name's not Brandt, so my conjecture, speculation, conspiracy theorizing, and inferences aren't any good, are they? Oh, I see how it works now.

Who is Brandt and how does he know all his information is accurate? How did and duplicate or questionable signatures get through the democrats vetting process?
Racine Journal Times Monday, February 6, 2012 6:30 pm
"However, not all signatures on petitions circulated by Mark Demet are suspect. When contacted by The Journal Times, Eric Oertel, 20, of Sturtevant, verified that he did sign the recall petition."
So if this is the case that he was actually a Wannggaard supporter, why would he get legitimate signatures.

Mau: Randolph Brant is the long time editor of the Racine Journal Times, and a far left leaning letter writer. In fact the J Times has moved dramatically closer to the center now that Mr. Brandt has stopped running the plantation. You other point of why would Mr. Mark Demet collect real signatures if his goal was to just be a person planting false signatures. The best case scenario so far on Mr. Demets collected signatures is that about 20% are fraudulent.

So, is Brandt saying that members of his recall committee personally know, or would at least remember meeting, every circulator that submitted a petition? But I thought that they offered the petition online so that people could print them out, sign, and mail them in to the committee, right? So, did Brandt and his committee personally visit the homes of those who mailed their petitions in? Very interesting.
"Then, his brother just happens to report these petitions as fraudulent to one of his best friends, who just happens to publish a blog that’s always opposed the recalls in the first place. Doesn’t that strike you as the least bit odd?"
Yeah, that's odd alright that an entire family would involve their friend that publishes an election watchdog blog in a mass conspiracy in some whacked-out attempt to discredit the recall effort that could effectively send one their own, Mark, to prison for a couple years.
Yep, that makes way more sense than an overzealous recall petitioner trying to pad the numbers by adding some fraudulent signatures into the mix. I'm definitely convinced. Heck, who wouldn't be with an explanation like the one Brandt gave with absolutely no independently verifiable facts to back up any of his conspiracy theory?
This is a joke, right? Someone please tell me that this is a joke - it has to be.

BTW - I thought that Brandt previously stated that the recall committee vetted out duplicate signatures so that they had an accurate count of the valid signatures that they submitted to the GAB, correct? So I'm wondering how Brandt did that exactly without creating a searchable database of his own and why duplicate signatures ended up in those actually submitted? Or was the previous assertion a LIE?
Curious readers would like to know.

From your own Patch Article http://caledonia.patch.com/articles/man-says-his-name-forged-on-recall-petition
The neighbor Jason Adams who said he did not sign the recall petition, had a nice conversation wth Mark Demet who had opposing views. So today Demet is actually pro-Walker and trying to discredit the work of the anti-Walker people.
"Jason Adams of Racine contacted Caledonia Patch last week and said he found his name on a petition to recall Sen. Van Wanggaard, though he never signed one. He believes his neighbor Mark DeMet forged his signature — and suspects that neighbor may have forged signatures of other neighbors and family members. TMJ4 found members of DeMet's family claim the same thing. DeMet wasn't home when TMJ4 went to his house.
Adams told Patch he doesn't understand why his neighbor would have done this.
"I had a nice conversation with (Mark DeMet) this summer about Walker," Adams said. "I told him what I thought, which was the opposite of what he thought. There was no anger there." "

So you've never heard of 2 people who have disagreeing views discuss politics without getting angry and violent? Your life is so sheltered that that sentence ("I had a nice conversation with (Mark DeMet) this summer about Walker," Adams said. "I told him what I thought, which was the opposite of what he thought. There was no anger there." ") in and of itself leads you to conclude Mark DeMet is actually a pro-Walker plant? As treasurer of the Committee to Recall Wanggaard, I can say, without hesitation, that the petition effort against the sitting state Senator was carried out with the utmost care for honesty and accuracy, and resulted in an overwhelming number of valid signatures demanding his recall.
We endorse the Sheriff’s Department’s investigation of reports of irregular signatures, and offer aid in that investigation to root out any discrepancy.
The petition circulator in question attended none of our training sessions, so far as we can determine, nor was he associated with any of our organized recall petition circulator teams. Indeed, no one associated with the Wanggaard recall effort can remember him at all.
In that there was considerable Internet chat recruiting spoilers and other assorted agents provocateur to discredit the authorized recall drive, we simply called upon the Sheriff’s Department to investigate that possibility relative to the person of interest in question.
If there is fraud here, all associated with the Committee to Recall Wanggaard aren’t the perpetrators – we’re the victims.

Build more prisons. After looking through those recall petitions we will need one dedicated to collectors.

I know your comment is facetious ( the one about arguing against voter id ) but democrats and union thugs cannot win without voter fraud and attempted intimidation.
