Recall Tracker: 8th District Now a Tossup and More Findings from Politifact
A recap of news and events surrounding the Alberta Darling and Sandy Pasch race for Wisconsin's 8th Senate District, and other recall races in the state.
8th District Race Now Called a 'Tossup'
After handicapping the 8th Senate District race as "leaning" toward Republican Alberta Darling for most of the campaign, WisPolitics.com is now declaring the race a "tossup."The political website notes that Darling won by only 1,000 votes in 2008 and that the Democrats are making this race, and the 14th Senate District, a high priority. The last time the site handicapped the races, on July 15, it said Darling appeared to have the advantage over Pasch.
On the Campaign Trail: Lieutenant Governor Joins Darling for Final Push
On Saturday, with less than 72 hours remaining before the pivotal election, state Sen. Alberta Darling’s campaign offices were a hive of activity as volunteers staged a final push to encourage voters to head to the polls Tuesday. Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch joined Darling to knock on doors throughout the 8th Senate District and campaign on her behalf.
In a video interview with Patch, Darling said this is about keeping Wisconsin on the right track.
On the Campaign Trail: Pasch Feeling Optimistic as Vote Nears
With less than 48 hours to go before the polls open up, Rep. Sandy Pasch hit the pavement with her supporters to snag those last few votes for Tuesday's recall election between herself, and Sen. Alberta Darling.
Hundreds filled the the Glendale campaign office over the weekend, helping make phone calls and sign up additional volunteers. In a video with Patch, Pasch said it will all be about voter turnout.
PolitiFact: Testing Darling Claim on Pasch, School Employees and Viagara
The Darling campaign has sent out direct mail with an image of an iPad on it, stating, "iBad, the Sandy Pasch Edition." The claim by the Darling camp is that Pasch voted to allow public school employees to use taxpayer dollars to pick up the tab for Viagra. However, PolitiFact checked this out, and Darling's camp only sites Pasch's support of collective bargaining, but there was no vote in Madison on the matter. The issue was resolved in Milwaukee when an arbitrator ruled in favor of the school district - years before Pasch came to office. This claim snagged a "Pants on Fire" rating from PolitiFact.
Additionally, PolitiFact checks out a claim by Wisconsin Club for Growth who's saying Rep. Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay) did nothing to stop fraud in the Wisconsin Shares child-care subsidy program. As well as claims by the Sierra Club that state Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) is "allowing mercury to harm our children" because she voted against an electronics recycling bill.
Tea Party Rally Supports GOP Who 'Did the Right Thing'
During a spirited rally in Thiensville Village Park Saturday, Tea Party Express organizers implored hundreds of supporters to take the conservative movement to the polls Tuesday and support the six Republican senators being targeted in the high-profile recall elections.
About 275 Tea Party supporters were galvanized by a half dozen speakers, patriotic music and flag waving during the hour-long event.
Voter Intimidation and Survelliance in Wisconsin
The Daily Kos reports that Wisconsin Jobs Now has filed a claim with the Government Accountability Board against Friends of Alberta Darling for allegedly tracking voters. In part, the complaint says, "Respondents on Auguest 2-4 unlawfully followed, trailed, surveilled and otherwise intimidated and coerced voters from freely exercising the franchise"... while engaging in early absentee voting.
State law says that voters cannot be intimidated or compelled to vote or not vote, however the Kos reports one man photographed and video taped voters for extended periods of time, and two vehicles followed voters.

The president was not right to ignor tea party. But there was no excuse for this. They worked 18 months on debt reduction and it was scuttled, almost as an after though, by a small group of republicans at the very last minute. This same small group that insisted on mixing debt reduction and raising the debt ceiling together. They refused to negotiate. They even attacked other republicans. It's like they went out to lunch, got looped, and game back in a fighting mood. It was surreal. Even ancors on the news channels were in shock watching it unfold.
The results are tea party gets blamed for crashing the stock markets. The president gets blamed for lowering the nations credit rating. Congress gets blamed on one side for refusing to compromise, and on the other for giving in. Anyone who has a market based retirement loses their life's savings. Everyone gets higher interest rates. And the trolls get to say I told you so.

Big problems are not solved with simple solutions. The republican solution is cuts in selective government programs they don't approve of. But cuts do not address the problems of waste and excess in government and do nothing to cut costs of health care. Heath care insurers charge too much and care too little. But republicans give health insurers non profit status, instead of working on alternatives.
What have republicans done to help the economy? They are forcing deep cuts to hurt the economy in time of recession. Republicans can't beat the president at the polls without destroying him. The scheme backfired, crashing the market, so they blame the tea party. It will take us years to recover our losses. If republicans deliberately force triggers our credit will go down further, along with the markets. The republican congress has declared war on the president. Republican governors are doing all they can to cripple the economy and stifle job growth. They are gambling with the countries economic future just to win an election. There will be other elections for them. But no turning back for us.
Michael Wade

No more republicans, gambling with our futures!
The republican plan is to cripple the economy and stifle job growth to defeat Obama. But attacking unions in the state that invented collective bargaining is not so bright.
Republicans are willing to ruin the entire world's financial market just so they can continue to hoard all the nations' money. 1 trillion lost each year to individual and corporate deductions and breaks is vital to the nation's fiscal health. Value bugetting would help corporations, by setting a fair but not excessive tax, no loopholing around it.
You can have wage without tax, but you cannot have tax without wage. Governments cannot be ran like corporations. Just about every penny the government spends is tax. Why cry about tax when we could be arguing about wages. Corporations are robbing us blind, denying workers a livible minimum wage , one that does not keep workers with families below poverty level. All employers could be encouraged to give their emoployees pay increases rewarded with tax decreases.
Craig

@Michael: First do a little research. Google Corporate tax rates worldwide. What economies are hurting the worst in the past decade? The US and Japan have by far the highest Corp tax rates in the world. Individual rates are much higher in those Countries who are business friendly. Denmark has a tax rate on individuals of 50-62%. What do you think our rates will be when we provide health care for everyone? Medicaid is expensive because it is run by the Government, stupid rules and added costs. People take an ambulance to the ER for a sore throat!
The only way to create more jobs is to bring them back from overseas, lowering Corporate taxes would help.
The market downturn is because a deal was struck that is worthless. Not enough cuts have been made and the debt is going to continue to grow. When a bond rating decreases, interest rates increase- thus killing the chance for economic recovery and more importantly makes the debt snowball faster due to the rate hike. This is why interest rates have been near 0% for the past year or so- the debt ceiling would have been reached much sooner.

Actually, Medicade runs on 3% admin costs. Can you name a health insurance company that runs that cheaply? The country is in this mess because of W.'s wars and tax cuts for the wealthy; healthcare is small potatoes comparatively. People can keep saying the economy is in trouble because of healthcare constantly (and they do) but all that does it make more people believe it; it doesn't make it true.
Lowering corporate taxes? No way. Too many of them pay nothing already. How about eliminating the tax loopholes that entice U.S. companies to hire and manufacture abroad? THAT, my friend, would create more jobs in the U.S.
Jay Sykes

@Denise Du Varnay... Administration costs on Medicare are in the 3% range, its in the 7% range for Medicaid. Both govt run healthcare programs and one costs 2 times as much to administer as the other. Can you explain why?
Craig
11:35 pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2011
@Denise
First, I am not your friend, I do not know you and you do not know me. 3% administration costs....ok
Dr. office call: $250
Medicare pays: $18
The 3% figure comes from which amount? Or is it an arbitrary figure invented by medicade? What about Medicare? Surely the admin costs are different!
Administrative costs for Insurance Companies are based on a very different number!
If you think the Government does anything cheaper than the private sector- your in denial.
You are dead wrong about jobs. The mindset you have is why we have no jobs.
I'll take an evil insurance company over Obamacare anyday. He threatened to withhold grannies SS check in August due to the debt. Imagine withholding healthcare for a month because of financial issues! No thanks, I'd rather live.

Under our current taxation, employers taxes decrease when the employees make more- it isn't working because we are competing globally. It is hard to compete with China's pay scale at a bowl of rice a day! Drop Corporate taxes to help get jobs back here. Give a two year tax holiday for corporate profits to be brought back into the US for investment- thus helping the market. Capital gains on that money will become revenue down the road. This also would address the issues of the US velocity of money- which is nearly dead- an indicator of a dying economy.

@Wade: Clinton believed in 'spreading the wealth' (among other things)
Giving the jobs to China spread the wealth of the middle class worker to the Chinese.
His goal was to have us all on an even playing field except for the super rich.
When you don't have tax rev. coming in from the middle class- the Gvt. goes broke.
BO is now involved in 3 wars. So if W was a moroon what does that make Obama?
I would like every citizen to have free health care, free dental, a yacht! But if we have no money to pay for it because manufacturing is all in China- what are you going to do?
The dems and BO need to let someone with brains fix the problems they have created.
