Scott Walker to Paul Ryan: 'Just Be Yourself'

As as the only vice presidential debate nears, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker weighs in on what we can expect to see on Thursday.

As the nation anticipates Thursday’s vice presidential debate, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says the best thing Paul Ryan can do is be Paul Ryan.

Wisconsin’s native son Ryan will join the stage with Vice President Joe Biden Thursday in Danville, KY. It’s the second of four scheduled debates before the election, and is the only debate between the Republican congressman and Biden.

"The only thing I would tell Paul Ryan is, 'to be yourself.' Those would be my simple words," Walker told Patch on Tuesday. "Paul Ryan is at his best when he is himself and in his element. He’s a man who can be aggressive but also respectful."

Thursday's debate has taken on added importance after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney emerged as the winner during last week's match against President Barack Obama. Nearly 66 percent of all voters thought Romney did a better job than Obama and the polls have tightened since, according to the Pew Research Center.

Now, the pressure is on Biden to push the reset button in Obama’s favor and stem the rising tide of momentum from the Romney campaign, according to an ABC News report. It’s something Walker said Ryan should be ready for.

“This guy’s ready," Walker said of Ryan. "Biden is going to come out more aggressive than the president was the other night. I was stunned by how the president performed in that debate.

"He’ll come out and repeat some of the attacks you’ve see in the past about Paul Ryan’s budget plan," the Republican governor added. "Most of those critiques have been false.”

Walker was quick to point out the well-rehearsed statistic that the Obama/Biden plan cut roughly $716 million from Medicare. According to USA Today, this favorite attack line from the Romney campaign isn’t exactly true.

Walker is hoping for another strong debate, which is how he characterized last week’s presidential debate.

“The American people got to see a good debate about the issues. It was very substantive,” Walker said. “Paul Ryan will hold his own. The pressure is on from the last debate, so Biden may try to live it up in terms of negative attacks. But I want to see a debate like we had last week.”

A Little Reagan in Romney?

Story after story from the media in the days after the first debate highlighted the tightening gap between Romney and Obama. Was it all from debate momentum? Walker said if you were around 32 years ago, you saw a similar kind of rally.

“It’s much like it was in 1980. Even though (Ronald) Reagan won big, at this same point in 1980, Jimmy Carter was still well ahead of Reagan,” Walker said. “The debates helped him come out and show Americans he was the reasonable choice to fix the economy.”

Reagan trailed Carter by 8 points in a survey conducted on Oct. 26, 1980. However, two days later Reagan soundly defeated Carter in their lone debate and planted himself as a solid alternative to Carter. Reagan went on to win the election by 9 points.

"People get that the economy is not where we want it to be,” Walker said. “All those things people get, and at least among independent swing voters, they have really found a comfort level that Mitt is able to fix it.”

Romney Has 'Fire in The Belly'

Walker also said a new surge of energy from Romney also has helped shift the polls in his favor.

Join Patch at our vice presidential debate viewing party on Thursday

Late in September Walker said he hadn’t seen enough passion in the Romney campaign. And Walker told FOX News that he wanted to see a fire in Romney's belly.

Well, Walker says he saw that during the debate and in the following week.

“I said he needed to show some fire in the belly. He showed it and he’s shown it since that debate,” Walker said. “I certainly think he’s courageous and the fact that he picked Paul Ryan and went against conventional wisdom. It was a bold move and showed that he can take on the tough issues.”

If he starts to do badly, all Ryan has to do is turn to the moderator and say, "So Obama went to your wedding. How's that working out for you?"

I thought the complete opposite when he turned to Mitt and stated "look im still going to listen to AC/DC highway to hell? for one thing thats were he and all of us with be going if We dont change!!! and he sounds like a Kid making that statement. I feel good about Mitt but not about Ryan...at all If he ever became our President(which i said about dum dum VP We are in worse trouble than We are already. He was chosen merely to appeal to the youth of this country (who 1/2 are probably heading in that Fire pit anyways) So yet another year I will cast my vote elsewhere neither Repub or Dem ...so sad isnt it? Sorry Mitt you have a young punk with a mouth on him. If Mitt can come back some how and show he is the Boss and not his kiddo maybe I will change my mind....

Nunya, how was what Paul Ryan said to Mitt Romney, as you indicate, disrespectful? What he said is true and we need someone to speak clearly and truthfully. Ryan is extremely smart and has a lot of respect from republicans and democrats. If you are going to vote, make it count. Threatening to vote for neither Romney or obama is wasteful and a childish comment.

Greg –

Yes, Ryan is only 42-years old, chronologically; he is about 14-years old emotionally… you probably have not seen this petulant child walk out on a TV interview or watched the Fox interview with Wallace…

Ryan is very thin-skinned, over-emotional and extremely undisciplined, just the type of kid I would want to see one-step away from the presidency…

Now, besides all these positive characteristics, he has a strict, radical, extreme ideology…

I would like to see Ryan give the American people some facts about his tax cutting plan. If one percent have 90% of the wealth in the USA and they pay no tax what programs will be cut to pay for federal services like education and aid to the blind. Who will foot the bill? Think America!

Is being a tax haven for millionaires such a bad thing? If rich people immigrate to our country to avoid paying high taxes in their home countries, I see that as a gain since they will be paying their taxes here.

It's similar to how the high corporate tax rates of the US is encouraging companies to pay their taxes to countries overseas at a lower rate. I'd rather lower the US tax rate and have the businesses paying taxes to our government...

Actually Cowdung, one fact you clearly are missing in that cave of yours is that is precisely what Romney is proposing. He is proposing a reduction of capital gains to ZERO. And since most of the 1 percent -- like Romney -- derive their income from capital gains, they will will effectively pay zero in taxes.

CowDung the problem is he's been all over the map on his capital gains proposals.... that is his wiggle from he previous position.... this is why you have Ryan and Romney talking about working with Congress. That is the exit "Oh, it was Congress that proposed this, not me. I just went along with it." Trust me if past is prologue, this tax cutting that is going on will not be followed by balancing on anything... it is just to increase the deficit and then have the temerity to talk about oh, we can't afford social security and Medicare anymore. that is all the republicans are interested in. they want to destroy both those programs and they have wanted to do that since the 1980s.

everyone knows what they are going to cut to give the One Percent continued tax breaks. The reason our country is in such bad shape is because the VOTERS do not take responsibility in voting on the right person to serve in this country. Any working person no matter the party affiliation knows that RICH folks are going to look out for getting more money and control of your lives. What RICH Billionaire care about the working folks. That is why laws had to be into effect to curb their taking advantage of working folks. We would still have children working if not for those regulations. Some folks just don't understand we all have to stand firm and build this country and get the right folks to run it for us. No one working for billionaires will do it.

NOT ACCURATE!

The GOP has wanted to destroy Social Security since it began in 1935; they have attempted to destroy ALL SOCIAL SAFETY NET PROGRAMS, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps and everything else, since these programs came into being.

In reality, the GOP is clearly inappropriately named; it should be called TAP, the TAKE AWAY PARTY.

That is the total mission of this party, from healthcare rights for women, people with pre-existing conditions, children’s food programs, collective bargaining, forced arbitration on legal claims – they own the arbiter, access to state courts, CAPS on liability damages, etc., they have all but purchased all republican state legislators, mayors, judges, and they are now working hard on buying the appeal courts judges… finally, they will install 3 more Clarence Thomas’s – the only tanned man in America who hates tanned people – on the Supreme Court, and they will be able to TAKE AWAY… EVERYTHING!

Talk about how he actually supports Obama's premise when examining that income category between $100 thousand and $200 thousand dollars per year... Talk about how he tried to hide his bias and entitled greed behind two dollar words, but while that binding academic discipline ever looms above. …What does Rosen do at Princeton? That sure didn’t look like any type of academic work to me…

Romney should win. It has been established that we admire, and just love love love the super rich no matter that they got that way by destroying our once beautiful Republic. I do, however, resent the way they pull God into this. Some of our religious leaders have noted that no true Christian could vote for these guys.

716 billion in medicare cuts

Romney’s been repeating that number a lot lately. Is it accurate? And was the money moved to pay for the national health care law?

Neither Obama nor his health care law literally cut funding from the Medicare program’s budget. Rather, the health care law instituted a number of changes to try to bring down future health care costs in the program.

What kind of spending reductions are we talking about? They were mainly aimed at insurance companies and hospitals, not beneficiaries. The law made significant reductions to Medicare Advantage, a subset of Medicare plans run by private insurers. Medicare Advantage was started under President George W. Bush, and the idea was that competition among the private insurers would reduce costs. But the plans have actually cost more than traditional Medicare. So the health care law scales back the payments to private insurers.

Hospitals, too, will be paid less if they have too many re-admissions, or if they fail to meet other new benchmarks for patient care.

jlfenton, how do you think health care providers are going to react to when payments are reduced? I know some doctors that have stopped taking patients because they are on medicare and they lose money on them. And if the hospital or doctor is getting less money from an existing patient, how are they going to make up the difference? By lower the quality of care AND passing the cost onto other patients and their insurers.

As far as Medicare Advantage costing more, yes, about 12% more. But, it is a different program with different benefits that may fit into someone's lifestyle better. For example, their is a copay instead of a deductible. And the feds are working to get the costs more in line with traditional Medicare.

The fact is Obama did take 716 BILLION out of Medicare with just a hope that his "reforms" can make up the difference. Unfortunately, it will be our retirees that will pay the price when we find out his reforms will not work!

The Anti-Alinsky -

You really do deserve the "Anti"; I have never read a more negative person...

The program has taken step ONE, and the ANTI says, IT WON"T WORK! THE SKY IS FALLING!

The 716B cuts to hospitals, doctors and other services has just started; furthermore, doctors have been limiting Medicare patients in their practices for well over 15 years, as they could always get more money from the private insurance providers. [And, the 20% reduction to doctor’s pay through Medicaid has now been waived by CONGRESS for the 7th year, only adding to Medicare costs.]

Obviously, we are going to need more doctors, clinics, hospitals and healthcare workers… so both Medicare and Obamacare reforms are, sit down, ANTI, JOB CREATORS!

You have to be BLIND not to see all the hospital construction - job creation - around SE Wisconsin!

Additionally, Lyin’ Ryan also takes this very same 716B out of Medicare in his budget, only he gives it directly to the insurance companies so they can pay higher CEO salaries & bonuses, while increasing the individual cost to beneficiaries…

Obama’s plan is hopeful, progressive, with corrective measures built-in, and will work, if given a chance.

I can just hear you now, talking to the Wright Brothers, IT WON”T FLY! THE SKY IS FALLING!

The spin words that are used confusing some folks who do not understand or read the facts. The spin words are useful when they want to give your dollars to the RICH. Another deduction is used when you lose your job and that is the FICA that you pay into and your employer contributes. These are due individuals when they lose their jobs. I'm sure there are some people that do not want to work, but President Obama will not just sit by and let this go on and on without trying to find employment.
Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have been pushing the same old set of falsehoods and a five point plan. To distract from their tax plan that would raise taxes on the middle class, Romney and Ryan are holding up this five point plan as a clear way to create jobs. But as independent economists have noted, the only clear consequence of their plan is “more harm in the short term” and slowing the recovery. This is fact.

There are investigations, court filings on Open Meetings law violation, misdoings in the Milwaukee County Executive's office, voter ID challenges, etc.; $20 million in new interest charges because of debt he restructured in order to fool Wisconsinites that he had "balanced" the budget, etc. He also accessed millions in mortgage settlement funds to fix a budget hole.

And if college grades are so important to you, remember that Scott Walker is also a college dropout and I understand had a "C" average. So perhaps you'll want to revisit/revise your wish. My great-great grandfather's favorite saying was "Be careful what you wish for!" ; )

Is this anything like the previous the sky-will-fall scenarios that other Republicans had painted before Obama was elected? You're forgetting an important detail. Republicans said from day one, that their job would be to make Obama a one term president. As a matter of fact, there is a book by Robert Draper ("Do not ask what we do") which makes mention of an "invitation only" meeting with GOP Hate-Propaganda Minister, Frank Luntz. The list consisted of Senior GOP Law Writers who literally plotted to sabotage, undermine and destroy America's Economy. Paul Ryan was among those in attendance.

You actually owe Obama a debt of gratitude that he was able to do such amazing things that presidents before him could have only dreamed of. And like Ole Man River, the economy keeps rolling along - And with no help from any elected Republican legislators. And we should reward your party for obstructing and putting party ahead of the people? That would make us all crazy.

And lets not forget, ryans budget is built on tearing all these things apart. We should all fear a romney presidency because his policies and those of ryan are even worse than what bush and the repubs did last time they had power. @Brenda -- Yes, what has Barack Obama done to this country since taking office? Let's see, he has slowly created the jobs that were lost in the Great Recession, and the stock market is at a four year high -- almost back to where it was before the plunge.

If you don't know what Bain Capital did to companies under Mitt Romney's direction, you haven't been paying attention. It was very profitable for Mr. Romney, but not for his workers who were let go and rehired for less in salary and benefits or those who were simply let go. The US taxpayer did end up having to cover the pension funds of some of these companies while Mitt took bonuses for himself.

Willard paid 2.25M to the Mormon Church - designated as a charity by the IRS - and he HAD TO DO THAT! The church demands a 10% tithing from each member, IF you want their power and influence behind you.

Further, he gave an additional 1.75M to the Mormon Church - which he withheld from declaring on his 2011 tax return - so he could effectively "keep his promise that he paid 13-14% all his life in taxes."

He will amend the 2011 taxes, add-in the 1.75M on that 2011 amended tax return, and end up paying and effective tax rate for 2011 of 6%! We, of course, will not know this, because he certainly will not - paranoid liar that he is - be showing us his amended 2011 tax return... what a GIVING fella!

Social Security and Medicare ARE very inportant to all of us. No one want to see them eliminated. We want to see them saved! The systems are failing and something needs to be done SOON to fix the problem. Anyone who works more than a year (4 qualified quarters) has paid into the system, and is contracturally entitled to receive benefits.
In the private sector you can do the same with annuities- pay a portion of your earnings until retirement age and then receive payments at retirement. If the Insurance company defaults on its obligation- the courts will go after them and fine them!
I would rather see a small cut or adjustment made to save the system than see it go broke and default on every American!

Privatization of SSI was proposed to be an option, they were never going to force you to invest in the market. The reason for it was two fold:
1) Those who were not adverse to risk could invest a portion in the market for potential of higher returns.
2) More funds going into the market helps prop up the market when a downward trend is forecast. Simple supply and demand.

I have been living off of my savings for well over three years due to disability. I was forced to apply for SS benefits by law, and even them I waited fourteen months before I complied with the law. I have a disability case pending due to ALS and MS. The Government keeps delaying my hearing in hopes I will be dead before they pay me any of my benefits.
If I am fortunate to live several more years, I would prefer to have 80% of my benefits rather than 100% of nothing. So yes, I support some changes to Social Security in order for the Trust Fund to honor it's contractual and binding agreement.

It is sad that we have so little to our lives that all we can talk about is money. Money don't keep me warm at night, my wonderful wife does. We need to reexamine our values and what is really important to us. Either our value system is rooted in money or it is rooted in love and helping our fellow man. Our people are generally extremely generous to those in need. Lets act in our political discourse from our best nature, rather from our greed.

DOUBLED in the last 4 years... now that's IMMORALITY... you don't help people by destroying their pride and self respect. Brenda, in response to your interesting comment that you don't think Mitt Romney has anything to do with "Made in China," why don't you take a look at this link (and sublinks). http://www.boston.com/politicalintelligence/2012/10/10/consulting-firm-led-mitt-romney-advised-chinese-and-russian-officials-the/12dn81bXZ5iZvmQWJp66LI/story.html

In September, the Boston Globe reported that Mitt Romney has between $500-$1 million invested in GOME, a Chinese company currently being sued by Microsoft for selling computers with pirated software. Also, in 1998, Romney was listed as the controlling person of Brookside Inc., a Bain affliliate. Bain purchased about 6% of interest in Global Tech Appliances, another Chinese company that exports washing machines, etc., to the United States.

Or ask him about Asimco. About 10 years ago Bain bought two camshaft factories in Michigan and closed them down by 2007. Now Bain's company Asimco makes those same parts to export to the U.S., receiving Chinese government subsidies that Mitt says the U.S. should be cracking down on. Which is it? Oh, and he personally has over $2 million invested in Asimco through Bain funds that are also invested in other Chinese companies.

Explain to the people. If 12 million jobs can be created after you (if) get elected then what kept Republicans from helping to creat any of these jobs now or at least over the last 4 years. Americans created the problems we have now..buying houses we could not afford, used credit cards like free money, etc..then elected Obama like he was the magic clean up man. Got rid of Bin Laden, Saved car industry, put banks in check, health care brought to the forefront, etc. Yep..we are in debt (old debt plus new debt) ..just like trying to clear up an overdrawn bank account..mostly from the old debt. Ryan needs to speak slowly as sometimes he seems a bit marble-mouthed. He also has to hammer home that any changes to Medicare are a CHOICE. The left mis-characterized Bush's attempt at change (recall the tasteless standing ovation the dems gave themselves during the State of the Union? that spoke volumes), and they'll do it again. It's a CHOICE, nothing changes for current recipients, and otherwise, the system will collapse.
Ryan also has to ensure that his math, projections, and costs are on target so they can't be called LIES and picked apart by the left.

Many conservatives seem daft when it comes to being duped and they'll vote "integrity." The left has no moral base so lies don't matter just so it sounds good and advances their power grabbing tendencies.

Ryan has the ability to bring Wisconsin to the Republicans, and maybe other swing states as well. My advice would be to be on target with Obama's Failures. Those being: #1. A National Unemployment rate of over 8 percent for 43 straight months. #2. Increased Welfare and Food Stamps by over 15 million Americans in the last four years. #3. The skyrocketing national debt. #4. The complete failure of Foreign Policy with 4 Americans being killed in Libya. #5. A failed Energy Policy with skyrocketing gas prices and continued dependence on Mideast Oil. Get that Keystone Pipeline Project underway to solve the energy and job crisis. #6. Defend the Military and keep it strong- this will add jobs too! #7. As far as Crime and Gun Control- Remind America that Fast and Furious under Obama/Biden/Holder gave Guns to the Mexican Drug Cartel who are now using them to kill American Citizens and Border Agents. That is the TRUE gun control issue this time around. #8. We need a president and vice president that will create jobs, keep the Military Strong, and keep Americans safe overseas and at home. Obama/Biden/Holder have failed on all accounts.

Hey To Everyone speaking here. I am an Obama supporter, but I must say to all of you. "If you don't believe that both candidates are giving you some of the truth and some lies, then we are all slaves. I just want to say to the Obama supporters, be careful what you say and know the facts and to the Romney supporters, don't put all of your eggs in one basket. There are alot of truths in both political statements and alot of untruths or truths being held back. I beleive that we can pick a candidate that best fits our own beliefs without insulting each other. Romney is not a stupid man and Obama is not the devil cometh. They are just men, who believe in handling things differently. I believe that the 1% should pay a fair share of taxes, but I also believe that too many handouts and entitlements can make a person lazy and dependant. I believe there is a middle ground and I think that it is the American People who need to hold any man or woman who is President to that Standard. One way is by electing the correct people to congress. Not a congress that decides to stop everything a President wants to do but a congress who is willing to work together for the American People. Remember, our constitution says that if the people of the Government are not working for the American People than we the American People have the right to remove them and get a new government who will.
God Bless to you all.

BUT??? Lyin Ryan (who also used to be on Social Security) wants to REPLACE OUR Social Security, with a 1 time NON CASH REFUNDABLE VOUCHER. They also want to do away with Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare. To ensure that 1% does NOT have to give up those BUSH TRILLION DOLLAR TAX BREAKS FOR AMERICA'S MOST WEALTHIEST AMERICANS. Which has already costed TAX PAYERS $10 TRILLION!!! As Lyin Ryan said on CNN last year. "WE the (R) party wants to REFORM (change) Social Security to those who are MORE educated & FINANCIALLY FIT." Then there is the (R) ran GOP that idiots like you voted in. That GOP has filabustered ANYTHING Obama has proposed!!! So? @c.eley...You need to get your history straight. The Carpet Baggers were members of the Post Civil War Republican Party. The defeated South was primarily Democratic and remained so until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Dixiecrats left the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party giving the Southern States to the Republicans. They were dominated by Moderate North Eastern Republicans until Ronald Reagan. Since Reagan, the Republican Party has moved steadily to the political right. The promise of 40 acres and a mule was made by the Reconstruction Republicans and they were the ones who reneged on the promise.

Grade A: under 4 percent unemployment
Grade B: under 5 percent unemployment
Grade C: under 6 percent unemployment
Grade D: under 7 percent unemployment
Grade F: over 8 percent unemployment.
And America-it should be the grading scale for any future President. The President needs to PERFORM AND CREATE JOBS! President Obama has 43 straight months of Unemployment over 8 percent. That is 43 straight months of an F-Grade. Now look at Gas Prices and Americans getting killed overseas serving as Ambassadors. I hope America is getting the Big Picture here!!!

Yes, Brenda. I suggest that an accurate review of Obama's performance must include the point of entry as a baseline. What were the circumstances when he took over? The economy was sliding over the cliff. Through that lens, it makes sense that things went from bad to worse. However. The freefall was stopped, and though slow, recovery (climb back up) is taking place. Also remember TARP-that started under the Bush 43 administration.

It suits some folks to have people forget that the Great Recession started before Obama took office, but patriots prefer to make up their own minds by doing their own research, right? ; )

Bren: You are correct that the recession started before Obama took office. This is the result of sending jobs overseas, mainly China. Many businesses here were simply unable to compete with labor rates equal to a bowl of rice per day. Those business owners were desperate to save their life's work and investment, so they also offshored the jobs. You attempt to blame Mitt for doing this, but who opened the door to do this?

@Brenda -- Mitt Romney did not use the term 'scum bag'. However, what he said was both condescending and inaccurate. He began by saying that 47% of Americans don't pay federal income tax. True enough. However, he went on to say that these people thought they were victims who were entitled to food, shelter and medical care, and that he would never convince them to take personal responsibility for their lives.

His mistake was equating working people who for whatever reason owe no federal income tax with people who are 'dependent' on some kind of government handout. It played well with his audience at the time, but it appalled some of the rest of us who understand that you can be working, taking no handouts whatsoever, and still not quite owe income tax because of various deductions and credits. Those of us in that category (I no longer am) are understandably nervous of having those deductions reduced. It makes quite a difference when you're barely scraping by.

The current president has not done anything he promised us during his previous election campain. The economy is a mess, inflation is just around the corner with Q3, foriegn policy has been a disaster, america looks weak to the world, we are more polarized by class, race, political beliefs, religous beliefs etc. than anytime I can ever remember in my lifetime. In my book the current president has failed miserably on his last campain's promises and concepts.
Once shame on him....twice shame on me.
I think we can do no worse than to give someone else a chance to see if they can perform the things they think will work. Give Romney a chance....Obama had his.

@CowDung...Many older Americans are forced to stay in the workforce to retain their employer healthcare until they reach the age of their 65th birthday. This recession has been devastating to older workers who are approaching retirement age and have found themselves unemployed. If one loses their position after the age of 55, it is very difficult to get a new position because of age. If they are able to retain their healthcare policy through the COBRA period they are lucky and usually paying the complete premium, very expensive. Also, older people are more likely to have preexisting conditions that would not be covered immediately through a private policy even if it could be afforded.

sward1947: Employer based health insurance can NOT exempt pre-existing conditions. This isn't a new law, it has been that way for years. Your friend should seek the help of an attorney if what you are being told is true. People with pre-existing conditions can change employers and continue to have coverage- they just can not become self employed and purchase individual health coverage. Then the condition is exempt, or worse yet- they are declined.

I was covered for everything else, but not the treatment I needed, because it had been diagnosed and I had been taking medication for it prior to the employment.. This was back in 1995-1996.

COBRA can be extended an additional 18 months, for a total of 36 months. There is always HIRSP (health insurance risk sharing pool) available through the State. If you are disabled, there is medicaid available to you after 1 year of disability.

If you and I were THOUGHT to have done that, it would be INVESTIGATED...IMMEDIATELY!! 10 years and nothing on the 9 years. That's funny? Obama is MORE than willing to release his. Sounds like Mitt is a CROOK to me. Or why wouldn't he show his TAX STATEMENTS??? Maybe? Because he DON'T HAVE ANY? Call him what you want. They NAILED AL CAPONE for that EXACT SAME DAMN THING!!!! So?? Because he's a (R)?? That makes him some kind of damn celebrity??? NO, just makes him another CROOK that broke FEDERAL LAWS, and thinks his FINANCIAL STATUS should keep him from being PROSECUTED!!! Where's that damn saying? NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW??? REALLY??? (R) party had a $700+ BILLION BAILOUT PLAN. WE the American people did NOT get to vote on how OUR TAX DOLLARS WERE SPENT. Right there is EXTORTION. The (R) party trying to end our benefits without giving US a vote on that..THAT IS EXTORTION!!! Then to send our troops over so EXXON makes TRILLIONS of $$$ by STEALING someone elses OIL, that is clearly RACKETEERING!!! Wanna hear MORE rules the (R) party is breaking or trying to break KEITH?? And this isn't accusing. These ARE facts!!!!!!!!

Some of you should go to You Tube and actually see what Ryan and AYN RAND are doing. Look at hsi philosophy and if you are a working person you will be making less wages and getting less health insurance for your family. If you have a grandmother or grandfather they will give them vouchers for medicare. If your kids want to go to college because you cannot afford it ask your parents for the money. You've heard these quotes or maybe you are deaf and blind. I can see you are not college educated.

Ayn Rand had a great vision? If we are all supposed to focus on our own "rational self interest," to what purpose has every ancient and modern culture established laws for appropriate/common behavior, provided alms, work programs, etc.? For what purpose is having faith that humankind can aspire to evolve? And for what purpose would belief systems tell us to "Love thy neighbor?" No, there's nothing in Ayn Rand's teachings that a child couldn't learn from watching two birds fight over a worm.

Not to mention the fact that Ayn Rand first tried to name her "philosophy" Existentialism, then realized the name was already taken. John Paul Who?

We are all engaged in a true form of "rational self-interest" whenever we perform an action, indeed, when we become whatever we choose to become. There is nothing wrong with” rational self-interest”, and I would, emphasis the “rational” word in that phase.

Had Ayn Rand stolen Existentialism from one of the truly great thinker's and writers of that genre, such as Jean-Paul Sartre, no one would have heard from her… and we would not be dealing with a philosophy (?) that mainly appeals to people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder or college freshmen/women…

Most kids leave Ayn Rand behind after the book report because her me-first ideology doesn't resonate with people of an age to appreciate that getting along with people makes life easier. Cooperation. Teamwork. Respect.

It's a ridiculous argument anyway because it's well known that Rand didn't follow all of her own philosophy. She ended up being a Medicare and Social Security "mooch." The "rational self interest" part, yes. But "collectivism" was just fine when the "collective" was benefiting her.

@NObama 2012: what a disgusting show of bigotry. The immoral ethics of Romney and Ryan must be squashed before further damage is done to the Nation's already tattered social contract. We need to re-instill the Judeo-Christian-Islamic traditions upon which this nation was founded, was built, and upon which it became strong. Aristotelian and Augustine principles will move us forward. These Randian greed-and-war-mongering candidates that the Republican party has fielded are a disgrace to our Founding Fathers.
This current admixture - Randian self-centeredness combined with the Tea Party's explicit desire to throw-back the Nation to that upstart-inspired, anarchy-filled era of 1786 has been thrown together with and added to the godless pursuit of excessive profiteering, which is praised by Romney and Ryan and their uber-wealthy self-centered, self-interested-only, greed-motivated elitist pals - this group that is the so-called "Republican" party of 2012. It needs to be stopped in its tracks and dismantled. Wisconsin can rediscover the roots planted by LaFollette, Nelson, and Proxmire and reject Romney, while rejecting Ryan twice

Ideally everyone should agree to play by mutually established ground rules. But in our government, the dollars of special interests take rights and the level playing field away from every other American. If we don't start dealing with this soon--the downward spiral--economics, bipartisanship, regulations--will continue.

Nick Poulos –

Yes, Willard & Lyin' Ryan both need to be defeated; Lyin' Ryan TWICE!

Beyond that, we have very different rationales...

I would argue that ALL religion is pernicious, limits man’s ability to discover and know himself and develop his full human potential, in addition to propagandizing him through social and church pressure to succumb to something no rational human being would ever allow for the sole sake of human inclusion in a group…

No, Nick, we need not GO BACK and “re-instill Judeo-Christian-Islamic traditions upon which this nation was founded…” In the first place, this nation was not founded by these three traditions. [Please acquaint yourself with the Tripoli Treaty of 1796-97] One of the most revealing sentences found in this document is "As the government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian Religion.”

Our forefathers were all over the place on religion, agnostic, atheist, deist, Christian, etc.

This is 2012, and the greatest growing religion in the USA is: NONE! That is correct; 20% of Americans, and growing, when asked their religious affiliation, say NONE!

What we need to do is teach individuals that there is a SOCIAL CONTRACT, AMONG ALL HUMAN BEINGS ON THIS PLANET… AND THEN ENFORCE IT!

cowdung: you won't even identify yourself as a real person, so I find it difficult to consider anything said by anonymous hucksters as worth a response or a comment, since your anonymity is something of an insult to the forum's contributors.
My statement does not damn non-believers: prior to recorded Judeo-Christian texts, Hammurabi's Code shows many of the same humane, human-focused, principles as the Judeo-Christian-Islamic traditions. I do not have "hatred for non-believers": your statement is false or else perhaps you are uncomfortable with your own un-belief. "hate" is an evil word and hating an evil act: I try not to hate even foodstuffs. I did learn long ago that there is a God and I am not Her. I am sad to learn you believe either there is no God or that you, yourself, are that god and thus all- powerful, however. I cannot judge you personally, I can share an opinion about a philosophy. If your morals and ethics are above the self-centered, greed-inspired morals of the unethical Randians, great. If you are a Randian, I encourage you to read her again. See whether, now that you are a mature adult , you truly support her and her immaturity and self-interest. But as a believer, I do confess that, like Heidegger, I have come to believe that "Only a God can save us." I also continue to believe that (and this includes myself): "What is most thought-provoking in these thought-provoking times is that we still are not thinking."

I just find it a bit condescending that you don't seem to think that non-believers have the same sense of morality as those in the Jedeo-Christian-Islamic realm. Celebrate diversity and appreciate people for what they are, rather than judging them for their beliefs or lack thereof.

@Nick Poulos & CowDung...I think that a status of faith is not relevant to the discussion. In this nation we have a generally accepted morality and ethics; and, most attempt to function within the scope of such a framework. The questions of faith or lack of faith is an indirect ad hominem attack as well as a red herring.

I know many take exception with Ryan claiming to be a Christian, yet also a Randian. This is again not relevant to his suitability or non-suitability as vice president. We need to look at his politics and policies. That is where the decision must come down to.

Mr. Ruble, as you know, Ryan's Randian beliefs are his guide, he has confirmed this. I take exception to his claiming to have Catholic beliefs and yet to have produced a budget plan in keeping with Catholic tenets, it's offensive, disingenuous, and that's why U.S. Catholic bishops denounced it.

I think if a politician attempts to sway people by playing the religion card he/she should be measured by it because they have introduced it to the discussion.

It sounds to me as the only time he made the claim that his faith was the inspiration for his budget was during an interview with the Christian Broadcasting network--no surprise there. Isn't it SOP for politicians to project one's faith when speaking to a religious audience?

The rest are about how the Church is being critical of him and his budget proposal. Not exactly Ryan trying to bring his faith to the forefront of the discussion...

Not sure what the nomination speech has to do with anything--he's speaking in pretty generic terms rather than touting his Catholicism...

If I had time, I'd find more examples. The fact that he also appeared on CBN and spoke the way he did suggests manipulation to me. His comments about his and Romney's faiths "coming together in the same moral creed," and "Each one of us was made for a reason, bearing the image and likeness of the lord of life" I found interesting. Those familiar with the basic tenets of Catholicism and Mormonism are well aware that the doctrines are dissimilar. I agree with Mr. Ruble that religion should not be relevant; but when it appears I believe it must be examined. I consider these remarks to be misrepresentative.

You are an offensive, ignorant Obama Supporter who will not face reality that our Country has deteriorated in the last four years with massive unemployment and a world that is more unstable due to failed foreign policy and Americans now getting killed in Libya while Members of the Obama Administration wanted us to believe that it was a "spontaneous reaction" to a film and not an attack organized by Terrorists. If you and others like you vote for Obama, you have sanctioned the killing of an Ambassador and don't give a damn about protecting fellow Americans and align yourself with the Terrorists in the Mideast. I would suggest that you be monitored as a potential threat yourself. I suggest that you get the Hell out of America and take Obama Liars like Susan Rice with you. Chuck, how do you come to blame the Obama administration for not working to protect Americans? Osama bin Laden was taken out during the Obama administration after Bush 43 stopped looking for him. America's supportive role during the Arab spring was not appreciated by pro-regime forces. It's no surprise that there were countermeasures. Concerning the ambassador, his assassination was a tragedy. But these people should be celebrated for their courage in entering volatile countries where American military support is far away. May we focus instead on how the people themselves tried to help? Many terrorist acts take place in the Middle East. We can't blame the people for the outrageous acts of tyrannical governments and religious extremists, any more than we can blame the Obama administration for a thoughtless video.

Please don't suggest that people "get the hell out of America." My family celebrates 400 years on this continent within the next 20 years. Even then, the nascent colonies were filled with abundant diversity. That's what sets us apart, even if we don't all agree, all the time.
