Students at Maple Dale Middle School were visited by internationally acclaimed jazz pianist David Hazeltine and his trio, who performed a few numbers with the student's jazz teacher, Jamie Breiwick Friday.

Hazeltine began his jazz career in Milwaukee at just 13 years old, playing at the Milwaukee Jazz Gallery and working with artists like Charles McPherson, Eddie Harris, Sonny Stitt, Pepper Adams and Chet Baker. Friday, he was accompanied by Jeff Hamann on bass, Brian Ritter on the drums and Breiwick on the trumpet.

"David Hazeltine is for sure the brightest star on the jazz piano horizon," said jazz legend Cedar Walton in a press release. "His style has a deep-seated commitment to jazz history while communicating a wealth of 'today's' ideas..."

Breiwick's love for jazz extends to his students, whom he nominated for Patch's WhizKids.

"These students have a very strong edication and commitment to music, and jazz in general," Breiwick told Patch. "(They're) sacrificing their own personal time before, after school, during lunch/recess, and on weekends."

You can find Breiwick playing locally at the Mason Street Grill on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and also fairly frequently at the Jazz Estate on the East Side.
