Trick-o-Carrot

This is such a fun time of year for children, especially as they get older and can understand Halloween, trick-o-treat and dressing up in costume. My twins turned three at the end of July and now understand the holiday, so we have already been to two Halloween parties - one at the Y and another at the Logemann Center in Mequon. They have really enjoyed the games, the pumpkins and dressing up as a zebra and a lion (the baby is an elephant too).

I love seeing them so excited to participate in this holiday, though I'm not a fan of all the candy! Don't get me wrong, I could live on m&ms alone but I don't like my kids eating that junk. I try to maintain a very healthy diet for them at home, including veggie burgers, fruits, veggies, eggs and green smoothies every morning. However, at both of the Halloween parties that we went to and the many that are coming up, candy is a main staple. One of my goals as a mom is to teach my children how to eat healthy and while also not depriving yourself of a treat once in a while. However, children do not understand "in moderation." For the kid's school parties, I am actually going to make little treat bags with Halloween stickers, pencils and Red Mango gift certificates.

I'm very curious to see how other parents of young children handle trick-o-treat and all the goodies that go along with Halloween (and really Christmas and Easter too). Do you allow your children one or two pieces of candy? None? The entire bucket?

Since we want our business to live up to our personal standards, at Red Mango, we are always looking out for the health of the entire family, especially the young tykes. We offer yogurt with no additives, and healthy toppings, such as fresh fruit and granola. Red Mango, Art Trooper and The Fresh Market are partnering together for a Halloween Extravaganza on October 31st from 3 to 6 p.m.

Located right outside of The Fresh Market, we will be painting pumpkins, sipping apple cyder, hot chocolate and fro yo. Healthy, fun ways to celebrate!!! Look for our red umbrellas!

What a great idea! My daughter is raising her children 1 & 3 the same way and it is a challenge! Thanks for the alternative option! Will be there!

Does she raise her child #2 differently?

Eating an entire bucket of candy once a year is not going to harm anyone. Instead of rationing the candy to one piece every day for four months, and paying the Dentist mega bucks- Let them have a feast! The worst that can happen is a day of frequent vivits to the bathroom. The candy is gone in one day, and the child learns that self indulgence has a price. Just remember to stock up on TP and peptol bismol.

Good God, let kids be kids! Keep your politically correct liberal BS out of their childhood.

I think that teaching healthy eating habits is part of a parent's job and aids the child in developing healthy habits as an adult. I know I watched my mom cook healthy as a child and I now eat healthy myself, and cook that way for my own children.

The whole bucket of candy on Halloween day followed by the runs...I don't think that would teach my 3 year olds not to overindulge because they wouldn't understand the concept. Maybe at a later age but then again, I remember those mornings in college when I said that I'd never drink again. Well...

I'm going to allow one or two pieces and a whole lot of fun. No political BS here..,just looking out for their well being. Thanks for commenting!!!

Some dentists give kids stuff if they donate their candy. Can also donate it to the troops. But I'd still let them have some the night of. That's the whole point.

It's cruel to let the kids go out and get all the candy and then take it away. Let them live a little.
