Furiously typing like a mad-woman at Alterra, earbuds squelching the sound of the coffee grinder, I feel like someone's watching me. From the corner of my eye I realize there's a man standing to my left, looking at me. Popping out the ear bud, I take a good look at this touristy-looking man. His get-up is complete with a fanny pack, baseball cap and a very Charlie Sheen-style shirt beneath is winter coat. He begins talking to me about my MacBook that I'm typing on for work and tells me to hit Command F5. This struck me as odd, but I obliged. What I didn't know was the depth of the story …

Are you a Tough Mudder? The 10-to 12-mile obstacle course was held Saturday and Sunday in my hometown of Cascade, with a whopping population of 706. Both guys and gals took to the mud, clawing through the squashy stuff and making their way to the finish line. With titles for checkpoint such as "Arctic Enema" and "Boa Constrictor," this challenge took some time - with many reporting three to four hours to complete. Take a look at the pics of those brave souls getting their muddy groove on and add your own. Just click "Upload" to get started! Not a Tough Mudder? Check out the Dirty Girl Mud …
When it comes down to it, behind just about every small business is an entrepreneur hoping to turn their passion into a paycheck. But, as many wise business advisers have noted: Hope is not a strategy. Business owners need support to turn dreams into reality. That's why Patch is pleased to announce a new partnership with SCORE, a nonprofit organization with 12,000 business experts nationwide who provide free mentoring to small business owners. The partnership makes sense because we believe that when local commerce grows, the whole community gets stronger. Patch already provides free listings …
As our work to help get local kids to school safely continues, this morning's meeting was overwhelmingly successful. We had dozens of ideas for both long-term and short-term solutions to the crossing guard shortage but we need some feedback from you — the busy moms and dads driving during peak crossing times, the parents who won't let their kids go through those busy intersections, the voters who would prefer not to have taxes raised so we can fund this initiative. We need your comments and suggestions to help make this possible. In the short-term With school kicking off in less than two …
We've all done it - you're running late, so you're driving on auto-pilot, texting and realize long after you're through the intersection - there were blinking yellow lights and a child was standing there. Luckily, that 10-year-old little boy didn't misjudge traffic and try ot make a run for it because you were driving an auto-pilot and never would have seen him. And with school starting in just more than two weeks, the close-calls will only become more frequent. Will it take the death of a child you know to change your awareness? So, instead of sitting on the sidelines, writing about the …

Small businesses are important. Some say they are the backbone of our economy. And they don't particularly need to be that small on Facebook: Fox Point-Bayside Patch has 349 Facebook fans. Community Bark has 1,510. The Green House has 35. Some local businesses have fewer, though. So, I'm proposing a special Facebook exchange. I'll post about you, if you post about me. Then, other local businesses can "share" that post from the Fox Point-Bayside Patch Facebook page on their own pages to help support other local businesses. If you are a Fox Point or Bayside area business with an independent …

No, you're not losing it! Patch looks different today. We did a quick, visual nip-and-tuck to the homepage to make it even more user-friendly. And we've moved a couple pieces of furniture. For those keeping score: We tweaked some words in our navigation bar to save space (e.g., "Traffic & Gas" is now "Commute") We moved the weather icon next to the Patch branding so you can find it more quickly! We moved, well, YOU closer to the top! (Our "shout stream" is now front and center to show all your comments off) And of course, we prettified a few things. While the site might look a little …
