BloodCenter of Wisconsin Salutes Veterans, Blood Donors During May

Special gift to those who save the day in honor of Memorial Day

Milwaukee, Wis. – April 30, 2014 – BloodCenter of Wisconsin is paying tribute this May to all those who save the day — our armed forces veterans as well as the everyday heroes who donate blood to help others in need. BloodCenter is offering a special “Honoring those who Save the Day” t-shirt to anyone who attempts to donate at any of its donor center locations from May 19 through May 31, 2014.

The t-shirts are a gift to commemorate the Memorial Day holiday and thank donors for their generosity. BloodCenter is asking area residents to make donating blood a part of their Memorial Day traditions as a special tribute to our veterans.

Wisconsin Vet Gives Back
Army veteran Jason Lowman is partnering with BloodCenter to remind the community that they can make a life-saving impact by donating blood. “It’s a noble thing to do,” says Lowman.

As a 16-year veteran of the U.S. Army and a regular blood donor, Lowman understands the importance of having blood available to those who need it.

“I may no longer be in the Army, but I still want to serve my country and my community. Service doesn’t end after enlistment,” says Lowman.

He became the one in need when he suffered an injury during his second tour in Iraq. He required back surgery and received blood. Now Lowman is partnering with BloodCenter of Wisconsin to help raise awareness of the critical need for blood in our community and beyond.

“It’s too easy not to do it,” he says.

Today, Lowman works with veterans in Southeastern Wisconsin to help them obtain fulfilling employment and adjust to civilian life.

Donors may schedule an appointment by calling 1-877-BE-A-HERO (1-877-232-4376) or by visiting www.bcw.edu or m.bcw.edu on their mobile device. Appointments are preferred to ensure a quick and convenient donation, but walk-in donors are also welcome.

Anyone 16 or older who is in general good health and meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to donate blood. Parental consent is required for 16-year-olds to donate. The entire process takes about an hour. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes birth date.
