Summer Fun at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center

In Fox Point and Bayside, there's plenty opportunity to take in the great outdoors, right in your background. Here's a sampling of events at the SANC.

In Fox Point and Bayside, there's plenty opportunity to take in the great outdoors, right in your background.

The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, 1111 E. Brown Deer Rd., offers a slate of events each week to enjoy Mother Nature.

Here's a sampling of what's to come this week:

Tuesday Tunes — Tuesday, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Meet at the Pavilion for an evening of music ranging from folk, country and anything in between. Feel free to bring your own chair. This event will go on rain or shine. If it rains, music will be held in the auditorium. For a complete listing of musical performances please visit www.sanc.org. No registration is required. The program is handicap accessible.

Avian Evenings — Wednesday, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Wing on over for your midweek talon and beak treat! You are invited to experience one of the center's “talented” flock. The event will feature members of the feathered family. This event will go on rain or shine. If it rains music will be held in the auditorium.

Summer Twilight Hikes — Thursday 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Have you ever wanted to stay late and hike around Audubon at twilight? Join the center for a guided nature hike through the summer twilight with an Audubon teacher. Meet at 6:30 p.m. in the exhibit hall and hike for an hour, explore this enchanted time of evening together, looking and listening for whoooo else is out there. The event is free with admission into the center.

Boomers and Beyond — Thursday, 9 to 11 a.m.

Sample the Milwaukee River at the center's Cleaver property three miles west of for aquatic life. Once you have a sample of life in the stream you will calculate the “biotic index” for the river, which simply means that you will have an indication of the quality of the water based on the living organisms present. This is yet another opportunity to get involved in citizen science, or information that people gather that helps the scientific community make determinations on the health and status of areas.

Hatha Yoga — Saturday, 10 to 11:15 a.m.

Reduce stress, increase your flexibility, and enrich your sense of well-being. This class is a great starting point for yoga practitioners as well as a wonderful start to the weekend for all yoga students. If the weather allows you will be outside listening to Lake Michigan as practice. Bring a yoga mat to class if you have one or borrow one of ours.
