Bites Nearby: A Montage of Montana in Wisconsin

A giant buffalo head stares down at you during your meal, but the food is so good, you probably won't even notice.

In an effort to avoid the super chains of the food industry and keep it local, Patch is expanding a little for this Bites Nearby feature.

This week, we took a look at Libby Montana Bar and Grill in Mequon, just a hop, skip and a jump away from the North Shore.

Libby's is located at 5616 W. Donges Bay Rd, but you can't take Port Road and Donges Bay all the way down because it's on the west side of the Milwaukee River, so be sure to check out the map to the right.

Once you find it though, this place has it all - indoor, heated volleyball sandpit court, massive dinning room, two bars, outdoor patio and a porch perfect for a beer while you watch the sunset.

From the front entrance, head left into a separate room with a hefty bar and contemporary music - I heard some Usher and Fergie music make it's way into the dining room during dinner. Keep to the right, and a massive dinning hall opens up. It feels like someone took an old barn and remodeled it into a cornfield country restaurant with a twist of metro Milwaukee.

What caught my attention, besides the food - and we'll get to that - was the interior design. Aged stained glass cabinet doors were strategically placed along the wall where the trusses fit in, with colored bulbs behind to showcase the artistic creations. A huge buffalo head is precariously placed above the bar at the head of the dining room.

Our waitress seated us under this massive chandelier that looked like something you'd find at , a little taste of grandma's basement, but shinier.

After giving the menu a gander, I decided on the pan seared Atlantic salmon. The fish was very tender and pink, with a dusting of dill flakes and even had the dark grill lines criscross along the fillet. Accompanying my fish was wild rice, sauteed vegetables in a lemon dill butter, and lemon wedge.

But fish isn't the restaurant's only dish, it also features entrees such as an eight-ounce filet mignon, grilled with a burgundy mushroom sauce, garlic mashedΒ  potatoes and sauteed vegetables. Or, if you prefer fowl over fish, you could try their rosemary roasted chicken, which is semi-boneless with country gravy, garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables.

Libby Montana's also caters, and as stated above, has a massive, heated, indoor sandpit volleyball court. Check out the full menu and website here.
