Business Year in Review: 1 New Grocery In, 1 to be Remodeled

Fox Point and Bayside have seen a couple of significant changes on the business landscape in 2012, though the biggest is perhaps to come.

In mid-December, the “red bag” Sendik’s family announced it was purchasing the Bayside Sendik’s and the entire accompanying building, with eyes on renovation and expansion in 2013.

Just across the Brown Deer Road/Port Washington Road intersection, another grocery store already staked out its turf. Fresh Market opened in April, the 21,000-square-foot store filling the vacancy left by Borders bookstore in the River Point Shopping Center.

Also in the River Point Shopping Center, Red Mango became the local entry in the frozen yogurt craze with its early September opening. Owners Peter and Elizabeth Braatz have long been community-minded individuals and they see Red Mango as both a business venture and a way to help others.

Two other businesses in the center took on new ownership in 2012, and changed names to distinguish themselves. The Athlete’s Foot became Andare Sports, as Eric Pilling took over the store. Meanwhile, two principals in Vita Fitness split off and opened Integra Fitness and Physical Therapy in the same location. The company planned to keep the same staff and hours but plant deeper roots in the North Shore.
