Green House Furnishings to Offer Fox Point Shoppers Contemporary Choices

Owner says she feels Fox Point is successful for new businesses, despite recession.

If all goes according to plan, shoppers in Fox Point will have a new option for finding contemporary furniture and decor sometime very soon. The Green House Furnishings on Consignment plans to open its doors at 6858 N. Santa Monica Boulevard in early October - an opening date only depending on how fast the furnishings can be brought in.

“This business will offer high end contemporary furnishings and home decor on consignment,” said owner and Milwaukee native Laurel Rodriguez. “We envision something complimentary to in that Legacies offers traditional high end furnishings. The Green House will offer more contemporary styles.”

Legacies, Ltd. is located at 7922 North Port Washington Road and, according to Susan Robertson, Fox Point village manager, adding The Green House will be a plus for local shoppers.

“We’ve had another consignment business in Fox Point that has done well so I think I would expect this business, with the climate of the population here in terms of furnishings, I think they’re looking at high end, contemporary consignments so that will fit in with the neighborhood, so to speak,” she said.

Furniture hunters can expect a good selection of tables and chairs, but the space for the new shop isn't quite an armory, so the vision for this store is on a smaller scale.

“The space will not allow for great big armoires and huge dining room sets and that might not be what people are looking for, anyway,” said Rodriguez. “We’ll have to wait and see. I envision smaller tables and occasional tables, chairs and such. We’ll have lighting, rugs, artwork and we’ll have tabletop decor, things that you might put on a tabletop or on a shelving unit like vases or decorative items.”

Despite an economy that has made things rough for many small businesses, Rodgriguez is optimistic about her store’s future in Fox Point. She pointed to a sense of optimism at the to join the local business community.

“One of the things they were pleased with was the number of businesses that are either new and settling into Fox Point, or are relocating to Fox Point because it seems that there are several and that’s a positive sign for the economy,” said Rodriguez. “So I think, in terms of Fox Point, perhaps things are going well or least maybe better than other parts of the city. I really find that consignment stores around the country are doing well. Consignment stores that offer what I plan to sell, upscale contemporary decor and furnishings seem to be doing quite well in this economy.”
