Milwaukee-Area McDonald's Accept Monopoly Money to Kick Off Contest

Customers were allowed to bring in any denomination of money for a free order of large fries.

More than 120 McDonald's restaurants in metro Milwaukee kicked off the latest version the popular Monopoly game with a unique deal: Customers were able to use Monopoly money Tuesday to pay for a large order of fries.

The promotion, believed to be the only one of its kind in the country,  ran from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. In addition to the free fries, customers also received two peel-tab game pieces from the fry box.

“Customers throughout southeastern Wisconsin love the Monopoly game,” Milwaukee-area McDonald’s owner/operator Robert Pyles said in a statement. "We wanted to try something that has never been done before in the United States to create even more excitement for our customers."

While the Milwaukee-area McDonald's appear to be the only ones in the U.S. that accepted the fake money, other stores around the country had special promotions Tuesday as well.

For example, customers at a McDonald's in Cleveland who normally have to pay for parking will be given "free parking" today, WOIO-TV is reporting.

McDonald's will be giving aways millions of prizes in its 14,000 restaurants in the U.S. in its 19th edition of the game, the company said. This year, McDonald's is expanding the number of products that will have game pieces, and the odds of winning a prize are one in four. The top prize is $1 million in cash.

The game also can be played online at www.playatmcd.com.

"The Monopoly game at McDonald's is back and bigger than ever,"  Douglas Freeland, director of marketing, McDonald's U.S., said in a statement. "With actual one in four odds of winning, millions of prizes and 125 million winning game pieces on menu favorites, like the Big Mac and Egg McMuffin, winning has never been more exciting."
