Golf Fun without the Sunburn, plus a Free Drink at "Fox on the Fairway"

What’s better than spending a summer afternoon on the golf course? Spending a summer afternoon enjoying a delicious meal in a temperature-controlled, bug-free ballroom and watching a hilarious comedy about golf, that’s what.

Memories kicks off its summer “Midweeks at Memories” series with the Ken Ludwig comedy Fox on the Fairway.  It’s a fast-paced, laugh-a-minute romp about two rival country clubs preparing for their annual grudge match.  The top golfer decides to switch teams at the last minute, leaving the other club scrambling for his replacement with a teeth-chatteringly high wager at stake.  Throw in some mistaken identities, love sagas, and great writing and you’ve got yourself the finest farce this side of the Mississippi.

Most unique to this production of Fox on the Fairway is it is a door-slamming farce without any actual doors.  Since it is produced ‘in the round’, the stage is set in the middle of the room, with the audience seated all the way around the stage.  This intimate setting gives audience members a ‘fly on the wall’ vantage point, with all guests seated within the first two rows. To create the ideal experience, the director is challenged with having to put on a show with 360 degrees of perfect viewing.  This means minimal set pieces, and as mentioned, no actual doors to slam.

Director Ralph Maffongelli’s clever set design involves multiple entrances and actors have been coached to develop impeccable timing, so characters can be running in and out without actually seeing each other.

Fox on the Fairway is all about golf, but if you have no interest in the game you’ll still enjoy the show,” says Maffongelli.  “If you play from time to time, you’ll like the piece a lot, and if you’re an avid golfer you’ll love this comedy.  Ironically, if you abhor the idea of chasing a little ball around some grass, you may have more fun than anyone else…”

To add to the fun, Memories is offering one complimentary drink (wine, rail drink, tap beer, or soda) to guests bringing a golf score card to a Fox… performance (and yes, mini golf counts).

Fox on the Fairway plays Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons June 3-18, 2014.  Your $40 ticket includes a plated dinner of Chicken Marsala with mushrooms, wild rice, steamed vegetable blend, Memories’ Famous Fluff, strawberry spinach salad, warm dinner rolls and rhubarb cake.  Show-only tickets are available for $25.
