Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele will honor WTMJ-TV Meteorologist John Malan’s military service during the Marcus Center’s annual Flag Day celebration on Friday, June 14th.
Abele will present Malan with a Milwaukee County Purple Heart Pass (PHP). The PHP program was started in 2013 as a way to recognize Wisconsin's Purple Heart recipients. Malan received a Purple Heart award after he was shot through the leg during the Vietnam War.
“Long before John was warning us of the danger from severe weather, he was serving our country,” Abele said. “This pass is a small way to thank John and all of our Purple Heart recipients for their sacrifice and dedication.”

The PHP Program was started by Abele and the Milwaukee County Veterans Service Office. Pass holders get free admission into a number of private and public venues in Milwaukee County and across the state, including the Harley Davidson Museum, Discovery World and the Milwaukee County Zoo.
Anyone in Wisconsin who has received a Purple Heart decoration is eligible for the pass; so far more than 300 people have received passes.
