The contest required students to present a memorized poem and then to take part in an impromptu conversation. Nicolet had the top showing in the state with 93 percent of Nicolet student participants taking home medals.

Key to Awesomeness:

"What is also important to note is that these honors reflect years of effective learning in the classroom, as well as hours spent outside of class practicing," said Mark Wagner, German teacher at Nicolet. "Some kids came in five or six times after school in the last two weeks to prepare.  If one compares how much publicity a state basketball championship (justifably)  earns, I think that some kudos should come to academic awards such as these."

We want to hear about more amazing children and teens, and we'll select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to sarah.worthman@patch.com
