How to De-Skunk Your Pet

It’s 7:00 am and my dog is barking outside like crazy.  I open the door and she comes flying in.  It isn’t for maybe 5-10 seconds before I smell it.  The unmistakable, assaulting odor of a skunk.  My cute, fluffy, white Lhasa Apso has been sprayed by a skunk!  Yuck!!  I get my 8 year old to chase her down to put her back outside.  He finds her rolling on the sofa...ugh!  I quickly run to the kitchen pantry, do we have any Tomato Juice?  That’s what I’ve always heard is the remedy to the skunk smell.  We don’t and as it turns out, it is not what de-skunks a dog.

I found this great website called The Skunk Remedy.  They have a recipe that is a pretty simple mixture of 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide,  1/4 cup of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of Ivory liquid soap.   And you know what?  It worked.  It was a bit difficult to clean her face, which of course is exactly where the skunk aims for, but it worked.

So, if you ever find yourself in that green, Pepe Le Pew haze, know that you can easily get rid of that stink.  Keep your Tomato Juice for the Bloody Mary that you'll want to recover from skunk anxiety.
