Falling Temperatures, Green Tomatoes, Last Taste of Summer

Hints on saving those last green tomatoes.

Apparently, Mother Nature has changed the seasons to full on Fall.

If you still have any unripened tomatoes on your plants, green on the vine, full sized, and you are not using floating row covers, old sheets or moving them into the garage (if you planted in containers) to protect them from the colder temperatures.

You could remove the fruit now and either make green tomato relish or remove them and place them in a paper towel lined box, making sure they are not touching each other and store them out of sunlight in the cool, dark place until they ripen. Some people swear that placing them on a windowsill, works great for them. But, I am addressing the larger quantities of unripened fruit.

If you are adventurous, you could also leave them on the plants and hope for them to ripen as the season changes into fall. Either way you want to play it, they will suffer somewhat in flavor as we are cooling down to below 50 degrees in the evenings a couple days this week.

Cool weather crops, like lettuce, radishes, collards, swiss chard, brussels sprouts, and all the root vegetables will continue to ripen and become sweeter with a touch of frost. Remember to water them every couple of days, if rain is not in the forecast.

Happy Fall Gardening.
