A New Tool to Connect Your Kids With the Best Books

Many parents and children wonder how to find the perfect book to enjoy. A handy resource for parents is a website designed to connect children to good books.

Now that your child has signed up for the Summer Reading Club, how do they know what to read?

One of the library's patrons suggested a website that she felt had helped her daughter learn to love history. This site helps children find some great titles.  What a wonderful goal it is to put well-written and interesting books into the hands of young readers.

The site has an interesting story itself.  Just imagine a family of experienced young teachers (Betsy, Cindy and Virginia) getting together for the holidays and talking about the very best of the books for their students.  It is easy to picture them excited and passionate about books, but it was the father of this group that suggested they share their ideas with others on a website.  The rest is history…  Well, actually the website is still growing and developing.  They have asked for input from other teachers and some pages indicate that more suggestions will be forthcoming.

The website is easily divided into core subjects of Language Arts (alphabet books, grammar, phonics and writing styles), Math (math functions, geometry, measurement, graphs, time, money and more), American History, World History and Science (plants, animals, dinosaurs, space and more) as well as Major Awards, Popular Authors and Popular Series and Character Education.

The Character Education section is divided into “Personal Values” (such as courage, determination and honesty) and “Interacting with Others” (such as generosity, tolerance, and kindness).  It is explained that stories can be used effectively to communicate these abstract concepts to children.  We all know that there are children’s books that portray these qualities; it is just so nice to have such good suggestions all in one place.

These are not comprehensive lists of all the books that fit into the category.  They are lists of some of the BEST books that fit into the category.  That is a big difference.  And it is a very important difference when looking for just the right books that will really spark the interest of young children – whether it is an interest in history, science, writing or just becoming a good person!

So – check the website, make your list and visit the North Shore Library to check out some great books for kids.
