North Shore Library Launches Summer Reading Program

The North Shore Library's 2011 Summer Reading Program "One World, Many Stories" will begin June 6.

The North Shore Library’s 2011 Summer Reading Program for children will begin June 6 and run until August 5.  This year’s summer will have an international flavor with the theme of “One World, Many Stories”.

As children read (or are read to), they can get little prizes, coupons to visit fun places or maybe even a trip to the Treasure Chest.  We just want them to read, read, read!

After all, one of the best things you can do to make sure your child reads well is to read to them or encourage them to read by themselves.  Summer is a great time to explore new subjects or to just let your child read for fun.

A research study done at Dominican University reported that students who participated in public library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year.  Students who participated in public library summer reading programs also generally demonstrated higher reading achievement than those students who did not participate.

All you need to do is to come in person to the to register on or after June 6. Each child will receive a Reading Record to keep track of the time spent reading.  The very first time you bring the Reading Record back to the Library showing that you have spent at least 30 minutes with a book, you will be able to start receiving prizes.

There will be lots of fun programs for children as well and they are all FREE!  Whether you like entertainers, gaming, movies or crafts, there will be something for you to enjoy.  Look for the favorites such as David Stokes and his animals, Rick Allen with his magic and the with their raptors. There will also be story times for little ones and book clubs for readers in first through sixth grades.

Teens, ages 12 and up have their own special program.  They keep track of the number of pages they read in their Reading Record.  Once they have reached 1,000 pages (just a couple of books), they will receive a prize pack.  But don’t stop there!  If they read at least 2,000 pages, they will be entered into a raffle to win more great prizes.  There will be a Movie Book Club, a Writer’s Workshop, a Gaming Program, an Anime Club, Creative Foods Programs and a Harry Potter Party!

We will look forward to seeing you this summer.
