You Belong @ Your Library

National Library Week April 8 through the 14th and is a great time to visit your local library!

National Library Week is celebrated this year April 8 to April 14.  It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.  You DO belong @ your library.  Come by and check it out.

The Mission of the North Shore Library as adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2009 “is to provide its patrons with access to materials and services which can improve their minds, broader their lives and fulfill their cultural, civic, intellectual. educational, professional and recreational needs. The foundation of this mission is the library’s enduring commitment to intellectual freedom for all.”

The North Shore Library serves as the “home” library for  Bayside, Fox Point, Glendale and River Hills, but serves many others through the Milwaukee County Federated Library System.

Bayside and Fox Point joined forces in 1979 to establish the original Fox Point-Bayside Library Stormonth School.  When the space became inadequate, a search was begun to relocate and expand the library.  Recognizing common goals, the communities of Glendale and River Hills joined the effort.  A solution was found when in 1985 Cardinal Stritch College sold the land where the current BVK office building and the Coventry Court apartment complex now stands. That sale included a provision that 20,000 square feet of space in the office building was to be given to the City of Glendale for community use.   In May of 1986, this space (the first floor of the BVK office building) became the North Shore Library.

By offering a wide variety of technology, today’s library can serve a more diverse population better than ever.  Patrons can read a book, listen to an audio book, watch a video, listen to music on a CD or even download a book to their eReaders.  They can check their e-mail, research a topic, work on their genealogy, find out the latest news or play a game on the computers.  There are quiet rooms to study and WI-FI for using their own computers.  The library offers a variety of free programs for both adults and children.  AND there are always friendly librarians that are eager to help you find what you need.

What’s not to love?  But don’t take my word for it.  Here are some of the things the North Shore patrons are saying about our Library:

“I really like the Library because my Mom doesn’t buy me books anymore, so I come to the Library once or twice a week.  Without the Library, I would be very bored.” – Emily

“I just want to let you know that we love it here.  We are here almost every day and the children feel at home here.  Everyone is so nice here.” – Mom

“At our Seder last night, we asked what most we appreciate outside of our family and friends and I said the Library.  Think of what Andrew Carnegie has given us.  And then I added the brains to enjoy to Library.” – a frequent North Shore Library user.
