Young Adult Author Visits North Shore Library

Young adult author, Lauren Oliver, will present a program at the North Shore Library on Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Oliver will discuss her new book Liesl and Po as well as her previous books Delirium and Before I Fall. This program is presented by Boswell Books and they will be selling her books at the event.

Liesl and Po is a magical fantasy is which Liesl lives in a tiny attic bedroom, locked away by her cruel stepmother. Her only friends are the shadows and the mice - until one night a ghost appears from the darkness. It is Po, who comes from the Other Side. Both Liesl and Po are lonely, but together they are less alone.  It is a special friendship indeed. Liesl and Po is one of Amazon’s Children’s Books of the Month for October.

Her other books, as well, are imaginative and clever. In Before I Fall, a very popular high school girl has everything going her way until a car accident after a late-night party. When she “wakes up,” she has to relive the last day of her life over and over and over again.  Imagine the insights!

In Delirium, Lena looks forward to receiving the government-mandated cure that prevents the delirium of love and leads to a safe, predictable, and happy life - until ninety-five days before her eighteenth birthday and her treatment, she falls in love. But everything may not all it appears.

The movie rights have been sold for both Delirium and Before I Fall, so it will be fun to await any news of films.

Each book has such an interesting premise. It will be fascinating to meet Lauren Oliver and ask her about her ideas and her writing.  Lauren grew up in a family of writers, so her family is not surprised. But her interests do not stop there; she also loves food (she would love to own a restaurant someday) and travel (her list of destinations grows). She is visiting us from Brooklyn, NY. According to Wikipedia, she claims to have written Before I Fall on her BlackBerry while going to meetings on the subway. We’ll have to ask her about that!
