UPDATED: 7-Car Accident on I-43 Backs Up Traffic for 7 Miles

Traffic was backed up to the Cedarburg exit at Highway C on Tuesday morning when seven cars collided on Interstate 43.

The North Shore Fire Department reported a seven-car crash around 7:26 a.m. Tuesday.

Traffic on Interstate-43 was brought to a crawl, but NSFD is reporting no injuries at this time.

By 8 a.m., a grey Hyundai was being loaded onto a tow truck just North of the Brown Deer Road exit, and multiple other vehicles waited in line to also be towed.

As of 8:10 a.m., traffic was still at a crawl heading south on I-43. Dozens of cars were getting off the freeway at the Mequon Road exit and backing up Port Washington Road heading south. Many were also driving down the emergency lane for more than one mile before the Mequon Road exit to inch toward the exit.

NSFD reports that emergency units were cleared by 7:45 a.m. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office had one lane reopened around that time and then the full freeway was passable by about 8:30 a.m. with a serious traffic backup well into Ozaukee County.
