Bomb Squad Called after Grenade Found in Fox Point Home

Woman found device while cleaning home of deceased father.

and the Milwaukee County Bomb Squad were called to a home in the 7000 block of North Yates Road Sunday after Leslie Hayes found what was believed to be a World War II grenade at the house.

After the death of her father, a Hayes was cleaning out his home with a crew from 1-800-GOT-JUNK, a company that specializes in cleaning up and disposing of unwanted items.

As they were sifting through the items, the woman found a grenade shortly before noon. The company's crews refused to take the grenade because it was considered a weapon, and suggested Hayes contact Fox Point police.

"It was kind of scary," Hayes said.

When officers arrived, they were directed to a back room where they found the "pineapple style" grenade, and determined that it looked very real.

Police contacted the Milwaukee County Bomb Squad who X-rayed the grenade, and determined was real but was no longer functioning.

The bomb squad unscrewed the top and showed that the powder had been removed, along with the blasting cap detonator.

The grenade was turned over to police.
