Crime Corner: Drunk Driver Blows Through Red Light, Hits Another Vehicle in Bayside

Also in the reports: a car is stolen, a missing stroller is found, and fines are paid.

Bayside police received a call to the 400 block of West Brown Deer Road on Friday and found two vehicles near First Star Bank at 11:10 p.m. The first vehicle had two wheels on the sidewalk and two on the roadway. The driver, a 29-year-old woman from Pewaukee, was talking on a cell phone when officers arrived. The office asked her if everything was OK, she replied that she had just been in an accident, pointed to another vehicle parked about 60 feet ahead and said that the car “just hit me.” The driver was unharmed, but when she spoke, officers said her speech was slurred and her eyes were glassy and red.

The officer walked over to the other vehicle and he could see that the passenger door and window was smashed. The passenger, a 29-year-old woman and the driver, a 31-year-old man, both from Brookfield, told police that they were both OK.

The passenger gave her point of view of the accident, stating they were going north on North Port Washington Road, and were turning west onto Brown Deer Road. The traffic signal gave this vehicle a green arrow to make the left-hand turn onto Brown Deer Road. While they were turning, a car "came out of nowhere" and smashed into the passenger side of their car. The driver agreed with this version of the events.

According to the officer's report, both the driver and passenger looked a little shook up, but otherwise appeared normal.

The officer went back to first vehicle, with two of four wheels on the curb. He smelled alcohol and advised the woman that he was going to conduct a field sobriety test. She passed some of the sobriety tests, but when she was asked to touch her nose, she could only reach her upper lip.

She was arrested for operating while under the influence. During the 20-minute observation period at the police station, the officer noticed that it appeared the offender had urinated on herself, because both the front and back of her pants were wet. She performed a breathalyzer test, resulting in a blood alcohol content of 0.17.
