Milwaukee Man Nearly Hits Officer Head-On

After near collision, man tries to hide out in Doctor's Park with a cigarette and some Steel Reserve.

It's 5 p.m., do you know where your Steel Reserve is?

On Wednesday around 5 p.m., a officer was exiting when, according to the report, a vehicle was "headed straight toward" him. The oncoming car was driven by a 36-year-old Milwaukee man who was well over the center line on East Dean Road.

As the vehicle got closer, the driver swerved back into the eastbound lane and overcorrected, putting him into the gravel. The car then drove over into the northwest corner of the parking lot at the park where the officer found him with more than just a bottle of Mountain Dew.

When the officer got to the car, he found the driver smoking a cigarette in his left hand and holding a bottle of Mountain Dew in his right. While they spoke, the officer could smell alcohol. The report says the liquid in the Mountain Dew bottle was more of an amber color than the typical yellow-green. When the officer asked the driver if he’d been drinking, he hesitated for a few seconds, then said he was having a beer to relax.

After hesitating again, the driver gave the officer the bottle so he could smell it. The report says the liquid smelled like alcohol. The man said he poured a beer in it so he could relax and the officer noticed two full unopened cans of 16 oz. Steel Reserve on the floor by the passenger seat.

Officers determined it was time for field sobriety tests, but the man just couldn't quite get through them.

During the one-leg stand, he put his foot down a few times, then he told officers, “I can’t do this one."

He was told to say the alphabet from the letter's "D" to "M." He began on "D" but went until he hit "R" then said, “I passed M didn’t I?”

This is the man's second drunk driving offense in the last 10 years. He had a blood alcohol content of 0.17 and was cited for operating while impaired (second offense) and prohibited alcohol concentration.
