Slip of the Tongue Nets 2 Teens Drinking Citations

Boys sway as they swear to police they hadn't been drinking, but one couldn't lie to his mother.

Every boy knows you should always tell Mother the truth – and now a couple of North Shore boys know you could wait until you're out of earshot of the police.

When responded to a call at the Fox Croft Apartments, 8620 N. Port Washington Rd., they met up with two teenage boys who were already familiar with police.

A 16-year-old from Fox Point and a 15-year-old from Glendale were sitting outside on the grass in front of the apartments when officers arrived just before 10:30 p.m. July 6. According to the report, the officers could smell alcohol on the teens' breath. The boys told officers they were not making any noise but had seen two other men "fist-fighting" in the parking lot before leaving in separate cars.

While both teens denied drinking, the report says they were swaying as they stood up, had glassy eyes and their pupils were dilated.

The officer asked the teens what they were doing at the apartments, because he had had prior contacts with them and knew they did not live there. One said he was visiting a friend who lived in the building. The other was not wearing any shoes, only socks, and said he'd left them in the building.

Based on their swaying and glassy eyes, the officer asked them again  how much they’d been drinking, but the teens continued to deny they'd drunk any alcohol.

The parents of the teens arrived to pick them up, and while one spoke to his mother, the officer overheard him say that he had consumed alcohol. That snagged them both underage drinking citations.

As the officer attempted to explain the citation to one of the boys and his mother, the mother grabbed it from the officer's hand and said she didn’t need any explaining, and left.

The officer explained the citation to the other mother and son, and before the teen got into his mother's vehicle, he called the officer a profane name.
