A stolen Mercedes Benz pulled over had plates for a Jaguar and citations stuffed in the glove box for someone other than the registered owner of either vehicle, or the driver.
Fox Point police were patrolling in the 7200 block of North Port Washington Road just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday when they queried a license plate of a car that looked like a blue Mercedes-Benz. A check of the plates showed them registered instead to a white Jaguar XJ6.
Police pulled the car over and, according to the police report, the driver said the car belonged to his friend. He was aware that the registration plates didn’t match the vehicle.
Police checked the vehicle identification number and dispatch confirmed the car been reported stolen through the Racine County Sheriff’s Office. Officers ordered the driver out of the car and arrested him for operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. He was later cited for operating after suspension, an unregistered vehicle, displaying unauthorized vehicle registration plates, operating a motor vehicle without insurance and a seat belt violation. He was then taken to Milwaukee County Jail.
The security supervisor from the auto auction lot confirmed the vehicle’s value and that it had been stolen from the lot in 2011.
The car also had two previously written citations inside the vehicle which had a name besides the registered owner for either vehicle, or the driver.
The car is a blue, 2008 Mercedes-Benz 350 Series 4-door sedan, valued at $25,797.82, according to the report. Police didn’t find any illegal contraband inside the vehicle.
