Barrett Takes Fox Point, Bayside By a Landslide

In Fox Point and Bayside, Barrett won by an even higher percentage than in the rest of Milwaukee County.

While Tom Barrett outpolled Kathleen Falk by about a 3-to-1 margin countywide in Tuesday's recall primary, he took Fox Point and Bayside by a landslide of nearly 4-to-1 against his leading Democratic opponent.

A grand total of 3,646 ballots were cast in both villages and while neither had any major machine problems as in some other elections, there was an issue with

With a solid turnout of 43 percent, and a total of 1,442 ballots cast, Bayside voters handily chose Barrett over the four other candidates and had only one write-in.

  • Tom Barrett received 713 of the 894 votes in the Democratic primary.
  • Governor Scott Walker received 539 of the 547 votes in the Republican primary.
  • Mahlon Mitchell received 364 of the 786 votes in the Democratic Lt. Governor primary.

The big issues with voters, however, was the misconception that they could vote for anybody and everybody.

"They're on the ballot one after another so they're voting for a Republican and they're also voting for a Democrat," said Lynn Galyardt, Bayside director of business and administration. "The machines reject them, we have to remake them and they have to go over and get a new ballot."

In Fox Point

The village had 44 percent turnout and 2,204 ballots cast. Barrett also handily won here with 1,031 of the 1,311 votes in the Democratic primary.

  • Governor Scott Walker received 875 of the 889 votes in the Republican primary.
  • Mahlon Mitchell received 582 of the 1,257 votes in the Democratic Lt. Governor primary.

Fox Point also had some overvoting, although with smaller populations, things were still able to remain fairly steady.

"The main question is we've had people voting in both offices," Clerk Tanya O'Malley said. "The major confusion is people are not understanding that that they can only vote once in this office."

Tom Barrett will face off against Scott Walker in the June 8 recall election.
