Cleaner, More Effecient Loose Leaf Collection

Bayside offers tips to help make leaf removal this fall more convenient for everyone.

This fall, the Village will be rolling out a new way of leaf collection.

Instead of having leaves collected by a two-person, trailer mounted vacuum unit, the village will be transitioning to an automated, front mounted, one-laboreroperated unit. By retrofitting an existing vehicle, the village can collect leaves with just one laborer, removing the risk of worker’s compensation claims. Similar to garbage and recycling pickup, the operator will now stay in the vehicle, controlling the vacuum equipment with hydraulics.

This new change will have minor, if any, impact on the homeowner, as leaves will still be collected loose at the curb. While the requirements of collection remain the same, a few areas of emphasis include:

  • Leaves CANNOT be mixed with yard waste. Twigs and brush can damage the vacuum equipment. If the operator notices yard waste mixed in, your leaves will not be collected.
  • Leaves must be raked out of the ditch area and adjacent to the street.
  • As was the case with the trailer unit, leaves in the ditch cannot be reached by the vacuum hose, and will not be collected.
  • Remember to have your leaves ready for collection by 7 a.m. the day of your scheduled pickup.
  • Each home in the Village receives three pickups over the six week collection season.
