Home Security Habits Checklist

Here's a few tips to help keep your home safe.

Is your house locked up?

1. Do you lock your doors whether you are in the house?
2. Is your front door locked while you in the in the backyard (and visa versa)?
3. Are your windows locked? Do you take extra measure to secure your windows?
4. Are your basement windows locked or permanently secured with bars or screws?
5. Do you keep your garage door and service door closed and locked at all times?

Does it look like anyone is home?

1. Do you leave both an indoor and outdoor light on in the evening when you aren’t home?
2. Do you have indoor lights on a timer when you are going to be away on a trip?
3. Do you leave a radio or TV on when your house isn’t occupied?
4. When you are away on vacation or a trip do you have someone you trust: 
   • Watch your house?
   • Move drapes, shades, and blinds?
   • Mow the lawn/shovel snow?
   • Collect mail and newspaper?

What about the outside of your home?

1. Do you keep valuables like bikes, lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc. locked up and out of sight?
2. Do you lock up tools and ladders when you are done with them?
3. Are the shrubs and plants surrounding your house well maintained and trimmed?
4. If you have a fence, can your neighbors or the police department see through it or over it?
5. If you have exterior lights, do your prevent shadows where burglars could hide at night?
6. Do you have exterior lights on from dusk until dawn?
7. Are your exterior lights connected to a motion detector?
