Fox Point Flips for Walker and Bayside Stays With Barrett in Recall Election

With record numbers of voters making their way to the polls Tuesday, Fox Point and Bayside were split in their support for who should govern Wisconsin.

Lines were out the door at Longacre Pavilion in Fox Point already at just 10:30 a.m., which Clerk Tanya O'Malley said is normally a slow period.

"This time of day is normally quiet, this is normally a down time because it's between school, work and the lunch hour," O'Malley said. "I don't know if this is representative of what a down time is going to look like today. The morning was busier."

It was a good representation, it turned out. Including some of the absentee ballots, more than 750 people cast their ballot before 11 a.m. The final Fox Point total was 4,037 votes, 79 percent turnout, with incumbent Gov. Scott Walker narrowly taking the village with 50.9 percent of the vote.

With this recall election, voters did not necessarily have to vote for both the governor and lieutenant governor, nor did they have to stay within party lines. Therefore, Wisconsin could have wound up with one party as governor and one as lieutenant governor. However, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch also won Fox Point with 50.7 percent of the vote.

Those results were a flip from 2010, when Barrett solidly took Fox Point with 52.7 percent of the vote

Bayside's support for Barrett in Tuesday's recall mirrored the 2010 election. In 2010, Barrett took 1,349 votes to Walker's 999. On Tuesday, Barrett eked out a win, but by a far lesser margin — 1,343 to 1,241.

The polls were also consistently busy with a turnout of 75 percent, a total of 2,594 votes cast. Lynn Galyardt, director for finance and administration for, said there were already more than 500 ballots cast, both absentee and regular ballots, at just 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
