MMSD Blamed for Bayside Sewer Backup This Spring

A new report finds that a metal sleeve recently installed in a Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District regional sewer folded onto itself under heavy water flows and obstructed the line.

A new report finds that the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District is responsible for an April sewer backup in Bayside during torrential rains this spring, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

On April 18, Bayside crews and contractors responded to a clogged sanitary sewer line on W. Brown Deer Rd. near the Bayside Garden Center. Over several days, crews pumped some 2 million gallons of water from the clogged 600-foot stretch of sewer line

Eventually crews were able to bring the water level in the line to a manageable level, and in turn, avoided impacting 400 to 500 homes with basement backups. The Bayside Garden Center wasn't so lucky, experiencing a backup on its property.

Following days of heavy rain, high and fast flows of wastewater in the regional sewer near the lifted an unfastened edge of a recently installed metal sleeve and it folded over onto itself, obstructing the line, the Journal reports.
