Stop! Pedestrians Have the Right of Way

I write this article from many perspectives, from being the Bayside Village Manager, a father of four, a motorist, a pedestrian, to someone who generally cares deeply about the issue of pedestrian safety.

As we quickly transcend into fall, parents and children have, or are developing, patterns traveling to and from school. We must all remind ourselves when we are behind the wheel, that among the many things we must adhere to, state law requires vehicles to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.

I write this article from many perspectives, from being the Bayside Village Manager, a father of four, a motorist, a pedestrian, to someone who generally cares deeply about this issue. I have personally witnessed many vehicles not stop for people at waiting by the curb or even when people are in the crosswalk. I have even watched squad car dash cam video of one of our officers sandwiched between two cars, one headed westbound on Brown Deer Road and one headed eastbound on Brown Deer Road.

Last year, the Village ran an emtionally intelligent signage contest, where you, the general public, kids, parents, teachers, and others, illistrated your thoughts. In all, a total of 115 signs were submitted and pictures of those signs are included with this article.

Please take a look and let them be a reminder of what our kids our telling motorists about ensuring their safety on the roads.
