Tax Freedom Day

Republican Party of Wisconsin Brad Courtney discusses Tax Freedom Day and the amount of time we work to pay off burdensome federal taxes.

Tax season has just passed, yet for most of the country we are still paying off our burden to the federal government. Tomorrow, April 20th, is Tax Freedom Day here in Wisconsin.

Tax Freedom Day is based on the amount of time on the job a person works in order to pay off their tax burden. Due to the influx of new taxes from the federal government, our Tax Freedom Day is pushed back two more days here in the Badger State.

This is due in large part by the onerous and burdensome new taxes being thrust upon our nation by the current administration and their tax-and-spend mentality that has no vision of balance in the future.

At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, our federal government continues to spend with reckless abandon. This is no way to grow the economy.

It is time for the federal government to take a page out of the Wisconsin playbook. In the two years since Governor Scott Walker took office, we eliminated a $3.6 billion budget deficit, creating a surplus that is now being passed directly back to the hard working taxpayers of the state.

Working hand-in-hand with that, Governor Walker and the Republican-led Legislature have held the line on property taxes, which have dropped for the median valued home here in Wisconsin. Wisconsinites are feeling relief for the first time in a long time and there is more to come in the future with the bold reforms being enacted now at the state level.

As tomorrow approaches, remember that we all have worked for 110 days just to pay off our tax burden. We can do better as a nation and help run our federal government more efficiently – just like we have done here in Wisconsin.

Our Governor is fond of saying that as Republicans we celebrate July 4th and not April 15th and I couldn’t agree more. If our federal government would take a cue from Wisconsin we would all be better off.
