Is my child gifted?

Parents often ask; how do I know if my child is gifted? A good starting place is to first understand giftedness, which you can read about in my blog last week here. 

We have formed a list of gifted characteristics (shown below) from a variety of sources. While no one child will display all of the attributes, we hope that this list will be a good starting place for identifying giftedness in your own children. Optimal social, emotional and educational development of gifted learners requires an environment tailored to their unique needs and mannerisms. To find out more please join us at our Parent Meeting, Wednesday, March 19 at Fiddleheads Café in Mequon from 6-8 PM.  We will be discussing Gifted Learners in Early Childhood.

CHARACTERISTICS OF GIFTEDNESS

Decades of research have revealed many characteristics typical of giftedness. It is important to understand and identify these characteristics in order to provide appropriate education and support to gifted learners.

Emotional

• Concerns for others (empathy)
• Emotionally intense
• Strong sense of social justice
• Interest in life and/or death
• Challenges authority
• Easily gets off task or off topic
• Boundless energy
• Prefers adult company
• Sophistication
• Discrepancy between personal /social skills and intellectual skills

Intellectual

• Highly inquisitive
• Makes unconventional associations
• Early and avid reader
• Independent thinker
• Perfectionist
• Intensely focused when engaged
• Easily draws inferences
• Need for precision in thinking and expression
• High ability to think abstractly that develops early
• Retains information easily

Academic

• Creative thinking
• Self-taught
• Unique and exceptional talent
• Large vocabulary, loves "big" words
• Learns quickly without repetition
• Absent minded regarding practical details
• High degree of curiosity
• Bored with rote work
• Frustrated in a traditional school setting
• Under achieving academically

 Open House

Scholaris Gifted Academy will host an Open House on  Monday, April 14 from 4-7 p.m.  Our goal is to assist families of gifted learners and provide the needed educational, social, and emotional support.

Parent Meetings

Parents in the Scholaris community organize monthly meetings to discuss the developmental needs of gifted learners.  Our meeting on Wednesday, March 19, will discuss Gifted Learners in Early Childhood.  6-8PM, Fiddleheads Café, Mequon.

Super Science Saturdays

Our Super Science Saturdays with Jerry Hoefs from Brain Brigade on April 12th is FULL.  Mr. Hoefs will also be offering classes during our Summer Convocation.  Please contact the school for more information. 

Summer Convocation

Scholaris Gifted Academy is pleased to announce our inaugural Summer Convocation! Sessions include:  The Science of Gases - July 7-11; Imagine, Construct, and Fly! - July 14-18; Music! Words! Create! Perform!...Opera! - July 7-11 & 14-18. We are also offering a Young Scholar's Adventure for our youngest learners (K3 through K5).

We are a child centered school serving the social, emotional, and intellectual needs of gifted children.
