Scholaris Gifted Academy September Update

Scholaris Gifted Academy is experiencing a busy and productive fall season. With the help of our generous donors, exemplary support from parents and families, and a hard working staff, the Scholaris students are learning, growing, and thriving.

SGA Orientation and Picnic

Scholaris families welcomed the new school year with an orientation evening on August 26th. After discussing policies and procedures for upcoming year, students and their families gathered outdoors for an all school picnic. New and old friends enjoyed dining outdoors, playing games, meeting new families, and coming together as a community for our gifted learners. It was a great way to begin our first year.

Book Shelves

On Saturday, September 7, over 25 volunteers from the Scholaris community met at the Frank L. Weyenberg Library in Mequon to move three large bookcases to SGA. The outpouring of support was phenomenal as parents, teachers, alumni, and their families worked together to move the shelves to their new home at Scholaris. Thanks to all for your hard work and commitment to Scholaris. The shelves are being used to divide our space into three distinct classrooms, and to hold our library books.

A sincere thank you goes out to the staff at the Frank L. Weyenberg Library for their help in allowing us to secure these shelves for our school. We appreciate your kindness and generosity.

SGA Parent Group Meeting

The first SGA Parent Group meeting was held on Wednesday, September 18, at Fiddleheads in Mequon. Parents of Scholaris students and alumni, and those of gifted learners from our community met to discuss ways to benefit the lives of gifted learners. Led by Kathleen Powell and Deb Zimmerman, themselves parents of gifted learners, a round-table discussion was held and  articles pertaining to  gifted learners were presented. As one parent stated, “I am so happy to know that I am not alone.”

We are presently refining our procedures to enable web-cast our parent meetings and discussion forums for those who cannot attend but would like to be a part of our support group for gifted learners, and benefit from our worthwhile discussions. Our Parent Group will meet the third Wednesday of each month at Fiddleheads in Mequon.

SGA Activities and Clubs

Scholaris Gifted Academy offers activities and clubs which are open to all gifted learners in the community. Our Chess Club, led by Mr. Bob Patterson, founder and Executive Director of the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation, meets every Wednesday from 4-5pm at Scholaris. Chess Club is offered to students ages 5-15 and runs for 12 weeks. We are in full swing, and students are enjoying playing chess, learning strategic thinking skills, and socializing with like minded peers.

SGA’s Super Science Saturdays take place in October. We are teaming up with Brain Brigade, a science program led by Wisconsin’s Teacher of the Year, Jerry Hoefs. Students will explore Lego Robotics and have fun while learning in a hands-on program designed to explore axles, gears, friction and speed. Learners ages 10-15 will meet on Saturdays, October 19 and 26, from 9-11am. Learners ages 5-9 will meet on Saturdays, October 5 and 12, from 9-11am. The sessions will be held at Scholaris Gifted Academy.

Please give this information to a gifted learner you know who may benefit from these activities!
