3 Percent Tax Hike Needed to Balance Budget, School Officials Say

Waning state aid and unavoidable expenses contribute to a projected increase in the district's tax levy.

Residents will likely have to fork over more on next year's property tax bill as school officials balance Nicolet's 2013-14 budget despite waning state aid and unavoidable expenses, according to GlendaleNOW.

District officials are projecting levying an additional 3 percent next year — residents with a $300,000 home would pay an extra $43 on the district's portion of the tax bill.

School officials say while state lawmakers increased the state-imposed per student spending by $75, state aid decreased 10 percent and the school must pay on debt for capital projects including a stormwater overhaul, energy efficiency work, and remodeling of the special education wing, according to NOW. Tax rates will increase over the next five years to help pay for energy savings projects.
