Girls Basketball Lose First Conference Game in Four Years

Their season 16 game unbeaten streak ended in a 65-57 loss to the Tigers.

The girls basketball team lost their first game of the season on Tuesday at home vs. Milwaukee Riverside, then lost their first conference
game in four years on Friday at Grafton. Their season 16 game unbeaten streak ended in a 65-57 loss to the Tigers despite 21 points from Senior Brittney Fair. Briana Gray (12) and Courtney Smith (11) helped keep Nicolet in the game but Riverside was in control from the start.

The the girls tried to regroup as they traveled to Grafton but fell to the Blackhawks 51-46.  Fair had 21, Smith had nine and Becca Olin had eight but it wasn't enough to prevent the end of their 44 game North Shore Conference win streak. The girls are still in first place (10-1) and still control their own destiny for the Conference Championship as the season winds down. This week, the girls will host Cedarburg on Thursday on Parents night. The Frosh Girls will also travel to Wauwatosa West on Tuesday to play a 4:15 p.m. game.

The boys basketball team split a pair of home games this week, losing to Racine Park on Wednesday but bouncing back and playing perhaps their best game of the season Friday night against Grafton winning 55-48. Against a very good Racine Park team, the Knights were dominated early but fought hard to play even throughout most of the second half. Greg Pigg led the Knights with 10 points. Then against the Blackhawks on Friday night, the Knights used a balanced scoring attack and some good passing to win their first conference game of
the year. Tyler Miller had 17 points. Treland Jenkins and Corey Smith each had 10 and Eugene Bonner had eight. The Boys will travel to Cedarburg on Tuesday and Germantown on Thursday.

The boys swim and dive team hosted both the WIAA Diving Sectionals on Friday and the WIAA Swim Sectionals on Saturday.  In the Dive Sectionals, Nicolet finished on top with 31 points. Friday at the Kern Center 8-3. Scoring from Nicolet was Nick Sullivan with a goal in the 2nd period. WIAA Regional Round 1 action on Thursday vs. Janesville Parker at the Janesville Ice Center.

The gymnastics team will compete tonight at home vs. Shorewood in a tune-up before the North Shore Conference Meet at Whitefish Bay on Friday at 4 p.m.

The girls and boys varsity ski teams both qualified for the State Championships and both JV teams made it to the conference championship. Mike Noonan made first team all- conference and Megan McMahon and Claire Kopetsky made second team. John Jaekels also won and Megan tied for second place with last year’s state champion Erica Engstrand and Claire was just 7/10th of a second back in third place.  A big pat on the back to Ginny and Westen Groh, they had to leave for an emergency and came back, strapped on the boards for a second run and both Ginny and Westen ended up with scored runs.
