Knights Update: Football Falls Short, The Dragon Dash and More

A roundup of sports events from Nicolet High School last week, and a look ahead to this week.

Here is a roundup of sports events for the last week at , courtesy of Athletic Director Kirk Krychowiak:

Boys and Girls Cross Country

The at Kletszch Park. The girls finished fourth out of 15 teams. The varsity team was lead by Lauren Cunningham who finished sixth overall, they also had strong finishes by Christie Crossman and Tiffany Pigg. The JV squad had big PR's by Jordy Borneman and April Pigg and was capped off by an individual win by Allison Maling. The boys team finished seventh out of 15 teams, the Varsity squad was lead by Josh Greenbergs eighth place overall and had strong runs by Randy Grzybowski, Greg Pigg, and varsity Jake Sevenich.

The JV squad had a sensational meet with monster PR's by Max Crouch, Garett De Boer, Liam Raasch, Brian Stender, and Sam Streeck. The Running Knights have a week off to train before they explode onto the Fondy meet in two weeks.

Boys Volleyball

The Nicolet boys volleyball team continues to improve. After beating
Whitefish Bay on Thursday behind 37 assists from Junior Steven Richards and 18 digs from Junior Chris Sorenson the Knights went to the very tough Tosa East invite and held there own. They beat a very good Racine Horlick team in three games then lost a hard fought match to Waukesha West in three games. West would go on to win the tournament. They then came back to beat Milwaukee Pius before losing to Westosha Central again in the maximum allowed games, similar to last year at the state tournament.

In the match versus Milwuakee Pius Senior Dan Mulcahy set a school record for hitting percentage by going 11 for 11 beating the old mark of 10 for 10. High praise for the day goes out to Steven Richards, Matt Dixon, and Matt Bootsma. The Knights are in first place in the North Shore conference and welcome homestead to the Nicolet gym Wednesday night before heading to Kaukana for the Dave Hash Invite on Saturday.

Girls Golf

The Nicolet girls golf team placed second in the North Shore Conference meet at Brown Deer. Leading the way for the Lady Knights were co-captains Emily Murphy and Rachel Rabenn. Sophomore Jaclyn Clark added a solid score to the mix along with Sarah Murphy's amazing long game. Finally, congratulations to senior Christie Bailey who actually finished just prior to darkness to help the team. Good Luck to the girls golf team as they compete in the Conference meet at Mequon CC on Tuesday night.

Girls Volleyball

The Nicolet girls volleyball team defeated Port Washington last Tuesday night in all three levels to remain undefeated in conference. On Thursday the team went to Westosha Central where the Falcons rarely lose for a non-conference match. In a tremendous match the Knights came out on top, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 15-10. This week the ladies will travel to Grafton on Tuesday. The JV team will compete in an Invite at Whitefish Bay on Friday.  The Varsity will play in the West Bend East Invite on Friday and Saturday and the Freshman team will play in a tournament at New Berlin West on Saturday.

Nicolet Football

The night but fell just a little short. After winning or being tied
for most of the game, Port Washington outscored Nicolet 20-6 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 34-27 victory. Nolan Wagner started the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brandon Kappel. Tyler Crass' 51-yard punt return put the Knights up 14-7 and Kappel's 7-yard run gave the Knights a 21-14 lead early in the third quarter. Treland Jenkins closed out Nicolet's scoring with a 6-yard run before Port scored the last two touchdowns of the game. Jenkins finished with 73 yards rushing on 13 carries. This week, the Varsity travels to Grafton to take on the Blackhawks. JV plays at Grafton on Thursday and the Frosh host Grafton at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Girls Swim and Dive

The Nicolet girls swim and dive team took fifth place in the North Shore Conference Relays last Tuesday night. This week, the team will travel to Port for a dual meet on Tuesday night before hosting their Sprint Invitational on Saturday.

Girls Tennis

The Nicolet girls tennis team will be busy this week. On Monday, the JV team will host Brookfield Central. On Tuesday, both the JV and Varsity will travle to Whitefish Bay to take on the Blue Dukes. On Saturday, the JV team will participate in the JV Conference tournament at Homestead and the Varsity will host it's own tournament.

Boys Soccer

The Nicolet boys soccer team will also be very busy this week. Monday, the JV2 hosts Germantown on the upper field. Tuesday is a home match for the JV/V vs. Cedarburg. Wednesday, JV2 goes to Grafton. Friday and Saturday, JV2 will play in a tournament at New Berlin West High School. Also on Saturday, the JV/V teams will play at Tosa East.
