Showdown: Unbeaten Nicolet Hosts Unbeaten Whitefish Bay

Top-ranked team in Division 1 takes on No. 4-ranked team in Division 2.

Two of the state’s best girls basketball teams are just 3.2 miles apart on Milwaukee’s North Shore.

Friday night, Whitefish Bay (11-0 overall, 6-0 North Shore Conference) makes the short bus ride to Nicolet (12-0, 6-0 conference) to settle the question of which is better.

The Knights have won 28 consecutive games overall, along the way last March. Two graduates from that team moved on to NCAA Division 1 teams (Alex Cohen, Northwestern; Ashley Green, UW-Milwaukee) but the Knights have continued to roll.

Senior guard Brittney Fair, who will , averages 20.1 points per game and Briana Gray averages 10.9, according to WisSports.net.

The Knights are ranked No. 1 in Division 1 in Wisconsin according to the coaches poll.

Whitefish Bay’s calling card is crushing defense. No opponent has scored 40 points, and only two have cracked 30 points.

The Blue Dukes — ranked No. 4 in Division 2 in the coaches poll — have won 17 of their last 18 games, losing to Luxemburg-Casco 50-39 in last year’s WIAA Division 2 state tournament.

Maya Jonas, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, leads Whitefish Bay with a 12.3 points-per-game average.
