After three years as principal of Stormonth Elementary, Dan Westfahl is stepping down for "personal and professional reasons."

The Fox Point-Bayside School Board officially accepted Westfahl's resignation Thursday night, after Superintendent Rachel Boechler was notified about it last week via a letter.

"I think Dan is the best principal I’ve worked with," Boechler told Patch Friday. "He is especially talented in literacy development and he will be a significant loss for the district."

Westfahl, who began his career in education as a first-grade teacher at Marcy Elementary School in the Hamilton School District in 1993, couldn't be reached for comment Friday. He will serve through the end of the school year.

He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Carroll College and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively, according to the district website. His doctorate is in leadership for the advancement of learning and service from Cardinal Stritch University.

The School Board has not begun discussion around filling Westfahl's post.

After 2-1/2 years in the district, Boechler announced in mid-January she would leave at the end of the school year. The district is expected to announce her replacement on May 15.
