The Village Scrapbook: Indian Hill Garden

Submissions from residents showcasing a day-in-the-life in Fox Point and Bayside.

These photos were submited by Jean Bernstein of the PTO for the garden.

Tammy Dinauer, a parent volunteer at Indian Hill, offers a little background on the garden:

In May, as part of the PTO's Outdoor Education Program, students at Indian Hill School started seeds in the classroom. While they waited for the seeds to sprout, teachers taught about plant biology and what plants need to live.

In June David Stokes came for the Spring Nature Program when the seedlings were ready to be planted. Kindergarden through 2nd graders each had an opportunity to plant marigolds, zinnias, nasturtiums, and corn. Students learned the difference between annuals and perennials and also helped plant perennials that had been donated by parents.

Many of the plants had unusual colors, textures, and aromas so we also learned about sensory gardens. Now that fall has arrived, the students can see how big and beautiful their seedlings have grown. The corn was harvested in October and the kids got to sample their own fresh corn in the classroom.
