Radon Monitoring - Get Clear Results

Radon monitoring - what to do and what not to do during the testing time. Keep your home clear of this deadly toxin.

Radon is a hidden danger when selling or buying a home. Frequently, sellers have renovated their basement for added space or usage, but probably never had it tested for Radon. Or you might be testing the Radon levels in a home you currently live in and plan to stay in.

Radon is a radioactive gas that originates deep in the rock below where we live, and rises as radioactive decay. It is one of the leading causes of Lung Cancer, Emphysema and Alzheimer’s diseases is inhaling this gas.

Monitoring can be done by a professional with calebrated equipment or you can do it yourself. Home kits tend to not be as accurate - nor do they explain the results; but they can be a first step to let you know if there is a potential danger.

When monitoring:

Do not OPEN ANY WINDOWS during the Radon Monitoring period. Opening windows can cause the Radon level to artificially rise and work against you and the testing for safe living conditions for all parties.

Do not use the fireplace or woodstove as a primary heat source if at all possible. Use of the air conditioner, furnace or furnace fan is fully acceptable and approved.

DO NOT touch, cover, or alter the performance of the Radon monitoring computer. Altering conditions can void the test results, resulting in the need for re-testing and additional payment typically by the home seller. If an occurrence or accident happends, as can happen in any household, please contact our office and review the circumstances asap.

Simply normally operate the dryer, range hood fan, bath fans, as well as entering and exiting the residence.

The radon monitor will be in your home for a few days. If using a professional inspector or certified radon monitor wait for them to return and collect the equipment.

If radon is found there are multiple simple ways to vent it out of your home.  Look for future posts on tips for buyers and sellers.
